The 809 Private Voice Studio at 809 Main St. publishes $20 per 30-minute lesson, along with $260 for a fall semester of thirteen lessons and $300 for a spring semester of fifteen, plus a $20 studio fee per semester. One named studio is quoting its own half-hour there. $29 is the figure our lessons begin from, and the first hour before it is free. Your SIRIUS coach fits the next piece to the one you sang in that opening hour, before a figure is fixed to anything. That studio prices a length; ours fixes the moment at which teaching begins.
The Smoky Hill Chorale, as announced in 2023, took its singers without sending them to the university's calendar first. Nobody at that door was going to tell a new member how their voice worked, because telling was not what the door was for. You shift the jaw a quarter inch on somebody's word and the sound changes with it; that is the arrangement an hour holds in place. Being described and being admitted are two separate transactions, and only one of them needs a desk.
The Concert Choir at Fort Hays State takes fifty to sixty-five singers from across the campus, and its Women's Chorale admits any woman enrolled there. Read either sentence closely and it turns out to be about registration: who is enrolled, and in what. SIRIUS keeps a written record of the day's singing, and no roll of students has a column for any of it. Enrollment is the only thing either of those two sentences actually establishes.
Auditions at Fort Hays State are held in March and April, and applicants are notified by May 1st about music scholarships. Between the day somebody stands in that room and the day an envelope arrives, weeks pass in which nothing is decided and nothing is heard. Week by week the recordings tell you what the line is doing now, and they accumulate on their own schedule. By May 1st that question has been answered once and for the year. The one a lesson asks comes back every week.
ACCESS Public Transportation charges $1.50 per person each way within the City of Hays and sends a vehicle wherever the previous evening's booking said to send it. A ride with that operator is already something arranged a day ahead. Teaching over video removes the arranging as well as the going. The hour sets its own length and keeps it, whatever the roads are doing. No ride was ever going to deliver that.

On March 10, 2026 three choirs shared one program at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on Park Street: the FHSU Concert Choir, the Fort Hays Singers, and the Smoky Hill Chorale. Entry to the first two is settled months earlier, at the university, on dates the music department publishes. Entry to the third was settled elsewhere, outside the university and without a date in anybody's calendar; the Chorale set its own terms in 2023. Both sets of singers walked onto the same boards on the same evening. For these two the threshold sits at the enrollment desk, and the stage is left open behind it.
The Fort Hays State audition calendar lists Saturday, March 6, 2027 with no string auditions that day, Thursday, April 1, 2027, and an alternate Saturday, April 3, 2027 with no voice auditions; applicants hear back about music scholarships by May 1st. The Smoky Hill Chorale never appears on that calendar at all. You measure one week against the last from your own recordings, and that works the same for whichever of those two singers turns up. Both walked the same boards in March; only one of them had a date in a calendar first.
The question worth asking here concerns the sequence: at which point does anybody get asked at all? At Fort Hays State the asking happens once, at the front, on a published date; afterward a singer is in an ensemble of fifty to sixty-five and the asking stops. SIRIUS catches the piece you brought in the first hour and goes on catching it every hour after, so there is no front to get past and no point at which the listening is finished. The enrollment desk is where this town does its asking; a lesson never stops.
Tuning comes first, since two notes either lock or they do not. Then the crossing point midway up a voice, slower to settle than tuning by a long way. Then carrying power: the item most singers name on arrival, and the one leaning hardest on the other two. You keep the song you brought right through the sequence, and the third item quietly turns out to have been the first item all along.
Fort Hays State University fields a Concert Choir of fifty to sixty-five singers drawn from across the campus, a select Fort Hays Singers of sixteen to twenty voices, and a Women's Chorale open to every woman enrolled. No single hour of teaching could offer a room of that size, and none pretends to. The hour hands over its own conditions first, stating what it costs and what it contains before anything is charged. An ensemble of that size puts you in a room where the listening is shared out; an hour puts one listener in front of you.
Sheridan Hall went up in 1915 as the Sheridan Coliseum, with a gymnasium and an indoor pool, and was rebuilt in 1991 into the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center, a proscenium house with a flat ramp and a small orchestra lift. Rebuilt or not, the room records nothing by itself; whatever happened in it on March 10 stayed there. Your SIRIUS coach identifies the spot in your throat where the tone changes hands, and the file holds that naming for as long as the file exists. The 1991 rebuild gave the room a proscenium stage and no memory.
The Hays Symphony, founded in 1914 and numbering around sixty players under Music Director Benjamin Cline, rehearses every Tuesday evening and takes musicians for a single concert or a whole season. It opened its 113th season on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. outdoors at the Downtown Hays Pavilion, 117 E. 10th St. The Hays City Band played the Hays High Performing Arts Center at 2500 E. 13th St. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. St. Nicholas of Myra at 2901 East 13th Street runs a Music Ministry describing itself as assisting and empowering the community in its sung prayer. The Hays Arts Council is rebuilding three connected rooms and running its exhibitions out of the Annex at 1010 Main St. while the work goes on.
Applicants to the music program at Fort Hays State fall under a published audition procedure, while the Women's Chorale is open to every woman on the campus and the Concert Choir draws from across it. All three statements report on a register of students and leave the matter of years lived untouched. You hear what an hour is worth in the week it lands in, and no register of students is consulted anywhere. The Smoky Hill Chorale reached its singers without one, and the Hays Symphony opens at both ends of a season rather than at one date in it.
ACCESS Public Transportation at 1205 E. 22nd Street runs in the City of Hays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and takes bookings for the following day up to 6:00 p.m., stating that service is available on a first request basis. Where it goes on a given morning is settled by the request. SIRIUS bends the terms when your week reshapes itself, so the conditions travel in the same direction you do. Ordering the day before is how one moving thing in this town already works.
Entry to the music program is reached by appointment, months ahead, on a date the department fixes. Entry to the Chorale was reached by turning up. Into a first hour goes nothing but the voice you walked in with, and the hour hands it straight back described, at no charge. It is the second of those a first lesson resembles.
Everything about March 10, 2026 is in the arrangement of that evening: audition and no audition, standing on the same boards, in one program. The screening had already happened somewhere else, months earlier, at a desk. The hour says what the file shows and says it the same afternoon, and there is no desk standing in front of that. What this town sorts at the front, it leaves alone on the stage.
