That is a common starting point and a workable one. On days you reach the full instrument, spend the time on the things that need real keys: touch, dynamics, pedaling, stamina. Between those days, a smaller keyboard still carries reading, counting, chord shapes and memorization perfectly well. Memphis is a piano city in ways that do not always announce themselves. Memphis Slim was born here in 1915 and taught himself the keyboard after hearing Roosevelt Sykes. Jerry Lee Lewis recorded at 706 Union Avenue, where Sam Phillips opened Memphis Recording Service in 1950 and launched Sun Records in February 1952. On Sunday mornings, players carry whole congregations from the bench. Learning here means stepping into a line of pianists still very much at work.
The city offers a learner more than atmosphere. The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis teaches piano, organ and harpsichord across bachelor to doctoral degrees in 30 areas of concentration, under National Association of Schools of Music accreditation. Rhodes College offers applied piano instruction to all its students, beginners included, with no audition required. The Stax Music Academy opened in June 2000 with 125 students and has been putting instruments under young hands in South Memphis since. The Memphis Symphony Orchestra, under music director Robert Moody, reaches its 75th season in 2026-27. Around all of that sits a working population of church musicians, session players and teachers.
A first year is mostly about getting two hands to do different jobs at once. You work on hand shape and a loose wrist, on counting out loud until the pulse lives in your body rather than your head, and on tracking two staves so the left hand stops waiting. Then come chords and their inversions, so a lead sheet marked C, Am, F, G becomes something you can voice and move through. You learn what the sustain pedal is doing and, more importantly, when to lift it. Good teaching also builds the ear: hearing major against minor, finding a melody without the page, moving a hymn into a key that suits the singer.
A lot of people here got their first chords on an instrument they did not own — a church piano after the service, a school instrument at lunch, a relative's upright in the front room. Then they go home to a small unweighted keyboard, or to nothing. That gap matters. Weighted keys push back, and the control you build against that resistance is what decides how loud each note comes out; after a year on keys that give way under no effort, the real piano feels like wading. The floor to aim for is modest: 88 full-size keys, a weighted or hammer action, and a sustain pedal you can work with your foot. If yours falls short, use it anyway — drill reading, rhythm, chord shapes and memory there, and save touch and dynamics for the days you reach the real thing. If a family upright stands in the house, check whether every key sounds and returns, whether the pedals do anything, and whether it has spent years somewhere damp; one visit from a tuner settles whether it is worth restoring. And where buying is not yet sensible, a practice keyboard can be rented through SIRIUS.

Royal Studios has recorded in a 1915 theater building converted for the purpose in 1957, where Willie Mitchell arrived in 1963. Mason Temple, begun in 1941 and completed in 1945, is the international headquarters of the Church of God in Christ.
Children can begin once they can settle at the instrument for a short stretch and reach across a handful of keys without straining. Teenagers usually arrive with something specific in mind — a song, an audition, a youth choir slot — and that motivation is worth building on. Adults are a large share of learners: outright beginners in their forties and fifties, and returners who stopped at twelve. Gospel, blues, soul, jazz and pop all sit well under two hands, and a good teacher works from the music you walked in with.
