Tell us what you want to play and we match you with one of more than 150 vetted piano teachers, taking your own criteria into account. The first lesson is a free trial lesson with no obligation, and you decide after it whether to carry on.
After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

Johnson City is not short of teachers - four providers inside the city line teach piano - but each runs on its own calendar: one bills a whole semester in advance and sets its lessons by the campus calendar, another is closed Saturday and Sunday, and the one piano technician we found with a published rate is based out of town and charges extra for travel. An online lesson bills by the month and fits the week you actually have.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no parking, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher follows your hands and your posture on camera, stops you where a passage goes wrong, and works from the same sheet music you have open. If a teacher turns out not to fit, you switch in the booking tool.
SIRIUS has over 150 piano teachers, part of more than 400 music teachers across vocals, piano and guitar. Every one of them is vetted and handpicked before a single lesson, carries a SIRIUS certification, and stays in regular training and quality control. We teach every level and every age, from a first lesson to stage-ready.
You are matched rather than assigned: tell us your style, your goals and your schedule, and we find the teacher who fits them. Lessons run live over video on software we developed ourselves for music lessons, so the sound carries the detail an instrument lesson depends on, with nothing to install. In the SIRIUS Workspace your sheet music stays open to you between lessons as well as during them.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. The published piano prices here come in three different units: $225 to $900 a semester at a university program open to the public, $180 to $480 for an arts center summer quarter that has already run, and from $199 a month at a private academy, which charges $250 to register after it takes you on.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.
That depends on what you want to play and on how much you practice between lessons. Piano asks two hands to do different things at once, so the early work is hand position, reading both clefs and keeping a steady pulse. A first piece that uses both hands together tends to arrive after a stretch of regular practice, and the exercises in your Workspace are what carry the days in between.
Yes, and the reason is specific to the piano. A piano lesson is mostly listening, demonstrating and repeating, and none of that needs the same room. Your teacher follows your hand position and your posture on camera and can stop you mid-phrase, and the sheet music you work from stays open in your Workspace between lessons. Johnson City teaches piano at four providers inside the city line, so what decides it here is not distance - the nearest larger city is 54.2 miles off - but whether a semester calendar and a weekend closing fit your week.

The university community program here is open to the public, not only to enrolled students: it teaches pre-college and adult players, and six of its 23 listed teachers take piano. It bills by the semester, $225 to $900 depending on whether you book six or twelve lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes, plus a one-time $50 fee for new students. A nonprofit arts center priced its summer quarter at $180 to $480, and a private academy starts at $199 a month and adds a $250 registration fee once you are accepted.
Both concert halls at the university arts center list a Steinway D, seating 1,252 and 206, and the public library keeps a piano in its meeting room. An organ workshop that dates itself to 1941 builds and tunes pipe organs in the city. Of the 491 tax-exempt organizations registered here, 27 are arts bodies, and none of the 27 carries piano in its name.
