After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

Winston-Salem has two community music schools that teach piano to the public, both on college campuses, plus three colleges that teach piano to their own students and one piano store that sells instruments but lists no lessons. One of the two schools publishes its rates per lesson; the other shows its prices only inside its online registration, which we could not read. Greensboro, the nearest larger city, is 24.4 miles away in a straight line.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no parking, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher follows your hands and your posture on camera, stops you where a passage goes wrong, and works from the same sheet music you have open. If a teacher turns out not to fit, you switch in the booking tool.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. The Salem Community Music School charges $40 for a 30-minute piano lesson, $60 for 45 minutes and $75 for 60 minutes, with enrollment by the semester, and new students pay for four trial lessons plus a one-time $20 registration fee.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.
That depends on what you want to play and on how much you practice between lessons. Piano asks two hands to do different things at once, so the early work is hand position, reading both clefs and keeping a steady pulse. A first piece that uses both hands together tends to arrive after a stretch of regular practice, and the exercises in your Workspace are what carry the days in between.
Yes, and the reason is specific to the piano. A piano lesson is mostly listening, demonstrating and repeating, and none of that needs the same room. Your teacher follows your hand position and your posture on camera and can stop you mid-phrase, and the sheet music you work from stays open in your Workspace between lessons. In Winston-Salem itself, two community music schools teach piano in person, and each begins new students with four paid trial lessons before a regular semester slot is set.

The UNC School of the Arts has run a community music school on its campus since 1976, with private lessons and introductory group piano classes for all ages; its faculty list shows eight teachers with piano or keyboard. The Salem Community Music School, on the campus of Salem Academy and College, teaches piano to children, teens and adults. Wake Forest University teaches piano only to enrolled students, and Winston-Salem State University requires four group piano classes of music majors, who are admitted by audition.
The Winston-Salem Symphony holds a yearly youth talent search open to pianists and other young players; entries are due by November 27, 2026, and both rounds take place at the arts school. A guest pianist joins the orchestra on November 14 and 15, 2026, and Wake Forest presents a solo piano recital on February 18, 2027. A family-run piano store sells Yamaha grands, Yamaha and Kawai uprights and digital pianos, and moves pianos.
