After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

Cookeville is not short of piano teaching - three places in town take students - but all three sell the month rather than the hour: a subscription at one, a flat rate at the second, and a year split into twelve payments at the third. The university's piano studio is for its own students, and its year-round program for children takes string players; piano turns up in a five-day summer festival, last held in 2026. An online lesson is monthly as well, and it can start at short notice.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no parking, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher follows your hands and your posture on camera, stops you where a passage goes wrong, and works from the same sheet music you have open. If a teacher turns out not to fit, you switch in the booking tool.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. Three providers in Cookeville publish a monthly piano rate: $70 to $170 at a church music school depending on lesson length, $148 or $197 at a private studio, and a flat $100 at a music store that does not say how long its lessons run.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.

Three places we found in town teach piano, and each prices it differently. A church music school prints four monthly rates by lesson length, $70 for 20 minutes up to $170 for an hour, spreads 46 teaching weeks over 12 payments and charges $15 once per family. A private studio sells a subscription instead: $148 a month for 45 minutes across 46 lessons a year, $197 for an hour across 36. A music store charges a flat $100 a month and does not publish how long a lesson runs.
The university here keeps a piano studio with two teachers and two Steinway grands in its 500-seat hall, and every music major has to pass a five-part piano examination before moving up. Its program for school-age children runs on strings. Of the 383 tax-exempt organizations registered here, three carry a music or theater code and none of the 383 is a piano body.
