The Rose Center is a Designated Agency of the Tennessee Arts Commission, and its grant money reaches organizations in five named counties. The SIRIUS school records the phrase that will not hold and bills by the session. A paid lesson here opens at $29, and the one ahead of it is free. Five counties hold their place around that grant money.
You do not need to sing well to begin, and the session is not a test. You sing something familiar, and back comes a description of the voice in plain words, with one passage named as the first job. The SIRIUS school redraws the sheet you keep after each session. A verdict of tone-deafness nearly ends up being pitch matching or the change of gear, and each of those is teachable. Even where the verdict came from somebody else years ago, the coach hands back a passage to work on.
Beginning is not fixed to an age. The published age lines here belong to rooms: college age and above for the Chancel Choir, grades 6 to 12 for the youth choir, third to fifth grade for the handbells. The coach who takes your part zeroes in on what has to be ready by then. Primary-school children begin playfully, the changing voice gets a coach who has met it before, and a return after decades is unremarkable here. Grade 6 thins out the singers one room will take.
The answer sits in two places: the voice you start with and the result you are after. The coach who takes your part expects the phrase that will not hold to come apart before the deadline does. A quieter change of gear, air that lasts past the middle of a line, pitch that stays put: those settle in gradually. The fall concert list of Walters State sends voices to churches and instruments to college halls. One date falls outside that: on 3 December 2023 the Morristown Campus Community Fall Band played the auditorium of Morristown-Hamblen East High School, a hall of the Hamblen County Department of Education, where the pattern gives out.
Lessons over video hold up for singing, and the reason is the recording. The coach who takes your part sends up the evening you set aside. We tuned the audio path for sung tone instead of talk, so a sustained note keeps its real character and the take in which a passage finally worked is still there on the following Thursday. What the Rose Center asks for a room is fixed to the room; what we ask is fixed to the session, from $29, workspace included. The record sorts itself by date.

Walters State Community College announced six concerts for one fall semester, and the list divides by instrument rather than by date. John Rutter's Requiem went into First United Methodist Church on East First North Street, the Community Chorale followed into the same building, and a winter choral concert went to First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, another town. The Jazz Band and the Morristown Campus Community Band both played the Inman Humanities Complex on campus. Voices to a church, instruments to a college hall: one list of dates, two owners of rooms.
The lesson under way delivers what has to be ready by then, inside a room you already occupy. The Theatre Guild, Inc. shows how a withdrawal reads here: its season lists five productions and marks one "PRODUCTION POSTPONED." The other four hold their slots and the fifth stays on the page with its notice. Does a singer waiting on somebody else's hall lag behind one who already has a room?
The lesson under way resets the evening you set aside. Clay Oglesby holds two posts in this town: Director of Choral Activities at Walters State and Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown, Tennessee, on West Main Street. One person, two employers, and the room changes with the employer. The Rose Center's rental sheet works the same way, giving each of its five rooms a day and a price. Where a sheet hands a room to whoever books the day, a singer skips a step by owning the room already.
The Theatre Guild says on one page that it performs at 2550 East Morris Blvd in the College Square Mall and on another that it has no permanent home; neither page carries a date. Pitch that stays put when the accompaniment moves. Air that lasts past the middle of a long line. The change of gear where one register gives way. Sight-reading at speed. Alongside those four, your coach books in what has to be ready by then. Who levels off a rehearsal plan, when the venue is still in doubt?
The Rose Center gives each of its five rooms a different line on one sheet, and the lines do not agree on what is being sold. Our own order inverts that. One coach, a plan you can read, and the opening lesson free ahead of the first bill. The singer who signed up totes the sheet you keep from session to session. One sheet sticks to the room it describes; the other travels with the singer.
The Rose Center posts its course list with the price beside the teacher rather than the room: fencing at $5 a class on Monday evenings, square dancing at $5 on Tuesday, a Rose Center drawing workshop at $20, each pre-registered through the instructor. The notice puts the money where the person is. Our sessions run in the SIRIUS workspace, where the recording, the short exercises and the written summary stay together. Alongside those three, the SIRIUS school files the score you bring, and the scores break even with the notes taken on them.
First United Methodist Church on East First North Street runs six groups and holds each in one room, the Music Room, under Ben Stapleton: the Chancel Choir Wednesday 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., open to college age and above; the Revelation Youth Choir Sunday 5:00 p.m. for grades 6 to 12; the Carillonneurres Sunday 6:45 p.m.; Kids Handbells Sunday 5:45 p.m.; Kids Choir Wednesday 6:00 p.m.; the Connection Praise Band Wednesday 7:15 p.m. The Rose Center, in a school building of 1892, opens Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Four doors, four descriptions, one room. A voice moves across those doors as it changes, and the room does not. Children of primary-school age begin playfully; a voice partway through the change gets a coach who has met that stage; an adult whose last singing happened in one of those groups starts at the voice of today. The singer who signed up keeps what has to be ready by then, which leaves the four doors unused and the list running short.
Lakeway Transit, run by the East Tennessee Human Resource Agency out of 2800 West Andrew Johnson Highway, posts three route boards by the minute past each o'clock. Blue prints the Transit Hub at :00 and W 13th North at :35; Green prints VBI at :40; ORANGE A prints the Transit Hub twice, at :00 and :47. The ORANGE B board prints one line, the Transit Hub, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with no stop listed after it. The SIRIUS school traces the score you bring wherever you open it. The board's own silence drifts into each plan built on it.
Encore Theatrical Company was chartered in October of 2006 and owns costumes, props and set pieces, which it lends. It rents no hall of its own, and its Mainstage productions go into the Inman Humanities Theatre on the Morristown campus. Alongside that practice of borrowed rooms, the SIRIUS school logs the evening you set aside. Begin where the sheet is still empty: sing a piece you have sung before, and listen to what returns. The result flattens the question of which hall will take you, since the first room is the one you sit in already.
Encore sells tickets by telephone on 423-318-8331 and stops phone and online sales two hours before curtain; after that the door is the way in. The Rose Center hands out its grant money across five named counties, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen and Jefferson. The SIRIUS school passes on the score you bring and the sheet you keep. That machinery makes no demand on the singer who signed up, and a starting figure of $29 a lesson asks for no more. Telephone lines and county lists reverse where a single voice is the subject.
