<p>Do the arithmetic on what the town already publishes and the comparison gets easier. The School of Performing Arts at 377 Short Street bills $90 a month for 30-minute lessons across 46 teaching weeks. Mastersingers charges $45 for the fall semester, $30 for the spring, $75 for the year. Those are other people's prices and other people's arrangements. Ours runs differently. The trial lesson is unbilled, and from there the hour opens at $29, with length and frequency deciding where you land above it. No semester, no sign-up window, no dues.</p>
<p>Grant the premise for a second. You have sung, you have heard it back, and it fell short. Useful information, and almost nobody has any. A verdict it is not, because untrained and unable sound identical from the inside and completely different to somebody trained to listen. Most of what gets called a bad voice is breath arriving too late, a gear change nobody taught you, or a note pitched against a memory when the piano was sitting right there. The Wednesday choir on West Stevens Street sets no test at all against any of that: the published way in is to drop by at 6:00 p.m.</p>
<p>Start at the bottom of what this city publishes and work up. The church takes children into its choirs from age 4 through the 6th grade. The school at 377 Short Street begins as young as three for general music, sets its other minimums by instrument, and writes plainly that "There is no maximum age limitation." Mastersingers publishes an attendance requirement and no age at all. Those numbers describe four different administrative situations: a general music class, an instrument with a physical minimum, a church program running to a school year, a chorus counting rehearsals. So which of those numbers was ever about you?</p>
<p>The honest answer begins with what the question measures. "How long" usually means one of two things. Sometimes it means how long until singing stops feeling like guesswork, and a few sessions will do it, because the mechanical parts respond at once. Sometimes it means how long until you sound the way you want, and no teacher can date that, because the target moves as your ear improves. You control neither talent nor time, only frequency: a weekly hour, a modest daily habit, and every session on file so the comparison is there when you want it.</p>
<p>Yes, with one thing said plainly first. An online hour will not put you inside a section, and holding your line while four people beside you sing a different one is a skill only a room full of singers teaches. A screen gives you the opposite condition: nothing blended, nothing covered, one microphone pointed at one voice. Precisely that setting lets somebody tell you why a phrase collapses. It also removes the drive across town and the fixed evening. Cookeville's calendar already contains three fixed evenings: Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.</p>

One church in Cookeville runs both ends of singing, and it keeps them on two different clocks. At 327 W. Stevens Street the worship choir tells you to "Drop by a rehearsal on Wednesday nights at 6pm." At 377 Short Street the same church's School of Performing Arts teaches voice and states that "Our tuition is based on 46 teaching weeks and is billed monthly." One door asks what day it is. The other asks what the year comes to. April Langford administers both.
This city keeps its doors wide. The Mastersingers rehearse Monday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Room 101 of the Bryan Fine Arts Building, and the published condition for singing in a concert is attendance: at least 80 percent of rehearsals. Dues run $45 for the fall semester and $30 for the spring. The Wednesday choir at 327 W. Stevens Street asks for less again. Both doors let people in, and both are procedures for filling a room on a given night. Neither is a procedure for one voice.
A rehearsal you may drop by unannounced is, by construction, a room that counts heads. Mastersingers puts the number in writing - 80 percent - and it measures showing up, never what happens once you have. In that room a director corrects the sound of a section, your line blended into it on purpose. An hour with SIRIUS reverses the arithmetic: one coach, one singer, and the only voice under discussion is yours. Where else will anybody spend sixty minutes on the two notes that thin out when you are tired?
Tuning comes first, being the fastest thing to hear and the fastest to fix. Then the handover between registers - mechanical, and yielding to work where it never yields to worry. Then breath, set up so a long line reaches its end with air to spare. Then stamina, so the fourth run-through sounds like the first. Then tone, which those four produce between them and which you never chase directly. Reading enters wherever your repertoire needs it, which for many singers turns out to be later than they had assumed.
What SIRIUS is good at depends on what you came for. If you want to walk into a Wednesday rehearsal and hold your part without guessing, the hour goes on tuning, entries and blend. If you want to sing something alone, it goes on everything that only shows up when nobody covers for you. Either way the arrangement answers to neither of Cookeville's clocks. Your vocal coach is picked for the instrument you have. The plan is legible. No semester boundary closes on you, and no monthly figure runs in the background while you are away. The first hour appears on no bill. Priced lessons open at $29.
Something happens in most lessons that is gone ten minutes later. A vowel opens, the passage that has stuck for a month simply goes past, and by the time you are home you cannot reproduce it. So the hour is kept. Audio built for the singing voice holds the soft end of a line where a speech connection would drop it as background, and the take stays in your workspace with the exercises and the session notes. If Thursday cannot remember what Monday found, Thursday can listen to it.
The Cookeville Performing Arts Center at 10 E Broad Street seats 456, belongs to the city, opened in August 1979 and houses Cookeville Children's Theatre productions, whose own address is 46 South Cedar Ave. The Bryan Symphony Orchestra keeps an office at 123 W. Broad Street and plays on campus in Wattenbarger Auditorium, 500 seats, named for James Wattenbarger, who led the music department from 1963 to 1982. The Mastersingers have been the community chorus here since 1978. On September 11 and 12, 2026, Fall FunFest fills the streets around the courthouse square.
The two clocks sort people before anyone has heard them sing. The Wednesday choir is an adult room with a weekday attached; the children's choirs meet Sunday at 5:00 p.m. from age 4 through the 6th grade, and only in the fall and spring. The school at 377 Short Street sets its lower limit by instrument and publishes no upper one: "There is no maximum age limitation." A lesson needs no category for you, because only one voice is ever in the room.
The singing arrangements named above each hold a fixed slot in someone else's week. Monday at 7:00 p.m. on campus, Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. on West Stevens Street, Sunday at 5:00 p.m. for the youngest ones. Miss the evening and you wait for the next one. An online lesson carries no such geometry. It opens at your kitchen table, and when the roster turns over or the car refuses, the hour moves; it does not disappear.
Asking whether you are good enough yet will not get you anywhere, and the question keeps people waiting a year. Nobody can answer it about a voice they have not heard, including you, because you hear yours through your own skull. The first lesson replaces the guess with a description. You sing something you brought, somebody who does this all day listens once, and you go away with the two things that are actually holding your voice up named out loud. It runs sixty minutes.
Begin with the singer and the calendar stops being the first fact. Cookeville has an open Monday, an open Wednesday and a school that bills across 46 weeks, each designed around a schedule that existed before you got there. An hour built the other way begins with what your voice does now. The city sings on both its clocks, and well. The scarce thing, here as almost everywhere, is one person giving one voice a full hour, and a lesson has never been anything else.
