Two decisions set the figure here: how long each lesson runs, and how many you take. Paid lessons start at $29. In front of them sits an uncharged trial, so you hear an hour out before money enters. Meridian publishes almost nothing to compare that against: the Music Institute names no rate, and the three private teachers it lists name none either. The chain shop on South Frontage Rd quotes $37 and $67 for thirty and sixty minutes, but those are national averages and carry no Meridian figure with them. The number worth reading is the lowest one.
Fifteen, eighteen, sixty-five. The notices around here print ages freely, and the Symphony Chorus, which prints one too, holds no audition at all. Generous as that is, it leaves the chorus with nothing to report back about your voice. Admission and assessment are separate operations, and your question is about the latter. A coach performs it, and the answer arrives inside the first hour instead of after a decade of standing in a back row.
SIRIUS takes children from around six. Below that an hour outlasts the attention available for it, and no other reason applies. Above it no figure has ever needed writing down: the oldest singers booking hours are decades past the last bracket printed anywhere in this town, and the work they do is the work anybody does. The figures around Meridian mark where rosters and cash registers divide. A voice divides nowhere.
Video entries for the Jimmie Rodgers competition are taken from March 9 to March 20, and three minutes is the limit. Twelve days is a real deadline. It measures how ready a particular three minutes is and says nothing about the voice behind them. A voice runs on a longer clock: you can expect the first audible change inside a month of weekly work, and you can expect the slower items to keep arriving for years afterward without announcing themselves. Nobody sets a finish date, and anyone who does has confused a deadline with a skill.
The published schedule prints 1:32 p.m. at Meridian for the New Orleans to New York train and 4:19 p.m. for the one running south. Two directions, one platform at 1901 Front Street, and you have to be standing on it. There is no direction to a video lesson at all. SIRIUS runs it live and stores what happens, so a correction survives the gap to the next lesson intact. No direction on that schedule covers the place you are sitting.

The Meridian Symphony Chorus puts its singers at 15 to over 80 and states outright that nobody is auditioned. The Jimmie Rodgers talent competition takes video entries in two classes, 10 to 17 and 18 and over, and looks at what arrives only once the class is settled. First Baptist Church at 701 26th Avenue runs three choirs through a single Wednesday evening, each with its own age. The MAX charges $14, $12 and $8 by bracket. The first question these notices ask is when you were born.
Lydia Brand's Concert Choir at Meridian Community College takes music majors and non-majors alike, asking about neither. Down the road the Symphony Chorus rehearses weekly and asks about nothing at all. Two open doors, and behind each of them a room designed to produce a collective sound. Producing a report on one singer takes different equipment. The hour that carries that equipment is not a group at all.
The chorus takes you without hearing you first. Generous, and useless as a report on you, because reporting requires attention to a single singer. A hall full of singers produces a single sound, and the conductor answers for that sound. The third soprano's jaw is nobody's business up there. Your coach has a single singer to attend to and nothing competing for the attention.
Breath heads the list, since nothing else functions without it. Support turns that breath into something a phrase can be built on. The change between registers stops being audible once it has been rehearsed enough times in the right way. Stamina keeps song four of an evening sounding like song one. You take them in whatever order your own voice makes necessary, and you apply the breath work to the song you walked in with.
Asking what a school hands you is asking the wrong thing. Meridian hands you plenty: a chorus with no audition, a college choir open to non-majors, a Music Institute teaching voice on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at 1020 22nd Ave. The useful question is narrower than that. Suppose somebody has listened to you properly. Who is still holding the record of it in March? SIRIUS answers that one. The coach who heard you in September is the coach who hears you in March, and neither of you has to remember what happened in between.
Three manuals, eight ranks, 778 pipes: the Robert Morton in the Temple Theater is measured in what it can move, and Frank Evans has maintained it since 1972. Instruments like that can be specified down to the part. Because no figure will describe a voice, SIRIUS stores the hour itself, and the minutes in which the tone came right stay there to be returned to. The organ has a number for every piece of it. The voice has none.
The Jimmie Rodgers Music Festival ran May 7 to 9 across three venues, from a free Thursday evening at The MAX at 6:00 p.m. to a Saturday afternoon on the City Hall Lawn at 3:45 p.m. with general admission at $25. The Threefoot Festival takes the same lawn on April 17 and 18, from 5:30 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m., and costs nothing. Meridian Little Theatre is in its ninety-third season, running October 1 to 4 through to May 6 to 9, with single tickets at $25 and subscriptions from $65. The public library at 2517 7th Street closes at 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
The Wednesday schedule at 701 26th Avenue can be read as three times or as three ages: youth at 5:30 p.m., children and preschool at 6:00 p.m., the Sanctuary Choir at 7:15 p.m. One building, one evening, three cohorts through it in a published order. The hour carries no such line, because nobody is waiting behind you for it. Nothing about where your lesson sits in the week reports your age.
The Music Institute teaches on Tuesdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., at 1020 22nd Ave, and its office keeps 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment. Tuesday is the day it has. Out at 2403 South Frontage Rd a chain shop teaches voice from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, a wider frame on the same week. Your coach is confined to neither, because no room is being shared and nobody is waiting in line. Thursday at 8:00 p.m. is available, and reaching it costs you no travel at all.
The first lesson is a hearing, and nothing is settled during it. Afterward, three things are: which weaknesses are worth a month of attention, in which order, and at what length of lesson. You arrive with a song and leave with a sequence. No audition has been required of you at any point.
Frank Evans has maintained the same organ since 1972. Attention of that kind does not come in brackets, and no admission desk in this town sells it. SIRIUS sells a weekly hour containing one singer, and it lasts while you go on booking it. It accumulates in weeks.
