Yes. Mississippi Matilda was born here in 1914 and had recorded four blues of her own composition, cut in New Orleans, by twenty-two. Nobody starts finished. What decides the outcome is having somebody accurate in the room.
About seven, provided the lesson ends while it is still enjoyable. The teenage rebuild wants supervision, not a pause. Adults begin at every age, and in a two-university town they skew older than you would think.

Hattiesburg grew where the Leaf and Bouie rivers meet, and it has been called the Hub City since 1912, the name arriving out of a local newspaper contest - the point being that the railroads all crossed here. It is the seat of Forrest County and spills west into Lamar, with about forty-nine thousand residents and a metropolitan area of roughly a hundred and seventy thousand. The timber and the trains have been replaced by hospitals, two universities and Camp Shelby out on Highway 49. New Orleans is two hours south, the Gulf Coast one, Jackson ninety miles northwest.
For a place of fifty thousand, the training on offer here is genuinely serious. The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music carries four hundred-odd majors and puts on more than three hundred recitals, performances and master classes a year, with a full voice faculty, degrees through the doctorate, and Southern Opera and Musical Theatre staging work at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center. It also fields a Hattiesburg Choral Union alongside its student choirs. Across town, William Carey University runs the Donald and Frances Winters School of Music - the first All-Steinway School in Mississippi - with its own opera and musical theater production every year and a dinner-theater season that reached its fifty-second year in 2026.
Two universities' worth of ensembles is somewhere to arrive at, not somewhere a voice gets diagnosed. A panel returns a verdict with no reasoning attached; a choral director is listening to a section. Finding out which habit is quietly costing you the top of your range takes an undivided hour, and a plan that gets written only once somebody has listened.
Air and support lead, because everything above them behaves according to what they do. Then intonation that survives nerves, a range that connects rather than arriving in stages, and the endurance to finish intact. Phrasing, text and stagecraft come last and land hardest.
Somebody chooses your teacher deliberately, having read what you want to sing. The opening hour costs nothing. The scheduling belongs to you.
Teaching a voice is hearing it precisely, so the audio carries the effort and the picture takes what is left. A leaking breath, a note landing fractionally under - both arrive undistorted and get fixed inside the phrase. Recordings and assignments stay in your workspace.
Be clear about one thing first: this is the Piney Woods, not the Delta, and the music history here is its own. In July 1936 a record company set up in an upstairs room of the Hotel Hattiesburg at Mobile and Pine and recorded, among others, the Mississippi Jook Band - sides that a standard history of rock and roll later singled out for carrying fully formed rock guitar riffs the better part of two decades early. A Mississippi Blues Trail marker on Mobile Street commemorates it, under the heading Roots of Rock 'n' Roll. That street was the Black business and entertainment district through segregation and is now largely a heritage district rather than a working one, anchored by the Sixth Street Museum District, whose centerpiece is the Historic USO, built in 1942 for Black servicemen. The Saenger Theater on Forrest Street, an Emile Weil house that opened on Thanksgiving Day 1929, seats nine hundred and seventy-eight, and still books shows. The city has turned out singers of its own: Mississippi Matilda, a daughter of this town, born here in 1914; Craig Wiseman, who left for Nashville and wrote number ones for half of country radio; and Adam Doleac, who grew up here and played baseball at Southern Miss before signing a Nashville deal.

Hospital shifts, a university calendar and a summer that makes every unnecessary trip feel unwise all work against an appointment somewhere else. A lesson opening where you already sit does not.
Start with the unbilled hour. Sing something familiar and find out what somebody trained picks out of it in the first ten minutes.
A city where somebody cut rock and roll guitar in an upstairs room in 1936 can carry another trained singer. Start a few blocks off Mobile Street.
