Every instructor on our roster has been through our own vetting before they teach a single lesson, so finding the right person in Tampa does not mean sifting through listings and hoping for the best. The match itself comes from what you tell us: your level, your schedule and the songs you actually want to play. Complete beginner, returning player, kid or adult, there is someone here for that. Sign up and you get a proposal for a free trial lesson with the teacher we think fits you best.
Our teachers work on technique, but always attached to real music rather than drills for their own sake. The platform was built for music lessons, so the audio arrives clean enough that your teacher can hear the difference between a muted string and a missed one, with no extra software and nothing to download. You can take a lesson from anywhere in Tampa or from a laptop while you travel, and the schedule bends around your week rather than the other way round.

SIRIUS gives you one-to-one guitar lessons shaped around what you actually want to play, and everything from finding your teacher to payment runs through a single platform. Adding a lesson before a gig or moving a slot when the week gets busy takes a few clicks in the booking tool.
Learn the fundamentals of rhythm, chord theory and the fretboard, then apply them to the music you like, from rock and blues to pop, country, metal or fingerstyle. Acoustic or electric, your lessons always meet you at your level.
Alongside your lessons you get access to a digital Workspace built to make practice more efficient. In the SIRIUS Cloud you find the tabs, chord charts and targeted exercises your teacher assigns, all in one place. Lessons can be summarized automatically, and recordings let you go back to the moment a riff finally clicked.
You can also join monthly group sessions to play alongside other students, swap songs and pick up feedback, so you benefit from one-to-one coaching and from a community of players at the same time.

Across the Tampa area, independent teachers and local music schools typically charge somewhere around $30 to $45 for a half-hour lesson and roughly $50 to $90 an hour, with the top of that range going to teachers who have long performing or studio careers behind them. Those are market rates for in-person instruction in the region, not SIRIUS prices. We publish our own rate before you book, so you can compare it against what you find locally. On top of that you get a free trial lesson, no long-term contract, and no time or fuel spent driving to a studio.
Most people who pick the guitar up a few times a week can strum through a simple song within four to eight weeks. Clean chord changes take a couple of months, barre chords usually a few months more, and after that there is no finish line at all - players keep improving for decades. The variable that matters most is not talent but how many short practice sessions you fit in between lessons. Fifteen focused minutes most days beats two hours every other Sunday.
Yes. You need an instrument at home, because what happens between lessons is where the progress is made. SIRIUS does not supply or rent out instruments, so you will need to buy or borrow one, but a playable beginner acoustic or electric starts around $150 to $250 new and the used market in the Tampa Bay area is generous. If you are unsure what to look for, book the trial lesson first and ask - your teacher can tell you what suits your hands, your budget and the style you are heading toward.
For one-to-one guitar instruction, yes. Your teacher watches your hands on camera, often more closely than they could from the chair beside you, and can stop on a fretting position or a picking angle without leaning over your shoulder. The practical gains outweigh the trade-offs: no drive across town in afternoon traffic, no lesson lost to a summer downpour, and a recording of the session to work from afterwards. Students across the Tampa area, from Seminole Heights to Riverview, learn this way every week.
Whichever one makes you want to pick it up. An acoustic needs nothing but the guitar itself and builds hand strength quickly, though the strings are harder on new fingertips. An electric is easier to fret and bend but comes with an amp, cables and a set of controls to learn. If you are after campfire songs and fingerpicking, start acoustic; if you are chasing the riffs that came out of this city, start electric. Either way the chords, the theory and the timing transfer straight across, so switching later costs you very little.

Tampa's guitar history is heavier than most visitors expect. In the mid-1980s a handful of local teenagers built the template for an entire genre: Obituary formed here in 1984, Deicide followed in 1987, and the records cut at Morrisound rewired what a downtuned electric could sound like. Both bands are still active and on the road decades later, and Hillsborough County put up a historical marker for that studio in 2025. That lineage sits beside an everyday circuit of blues players, cover bands and singer-songwriters.
The Ritz Ybor is the clearest sign the city still books guitar music: its calendar runs from hard rock to blues guitar to pop-punk, with acts such as Clutch, Christone Kingfish Ingram and Bowling for Soup among the names it draws. The Orpheum on North Nebraska Avenue leans indie and books touring bands like Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy and The Linda Lindas. Skipper's Smokehouse on Skipper Road puts free live music on its open-air stage under the oaks every Sunday afternoon. Downtown gets the Gasparilla Music Festival, which returned in 2026 at its new home on Meridian Fields.
Getting to a teacher is the harder part. The metro spreads around a bay, so a studio in Carrollwood when you live in Riverview means an hour each way, much of it in traffic that stalls the moment one of the near-daily summer thunderstorms opens up. Add the shift patterns of a hospital, airport and hospitality economy and a fixed Tuesday-at-six slot across town quietly stops happening. That is the honest reason most of our guitar lessons in Tampa run online. Your teacher stays the same wherever you are, and shifting a session costs a few clicks instead of a lost evening.
Beginners start with open chords and the unglamorous part nobody posts about: switching between them cleanly, in time, without staring at your hand. Then come strumming patterns you feel rather than count, alternate picking for single-note lines, and hammer-ons and pull-offs for the phrasing that turns an exercise into music. Barre chords arrive when your hand is ready, and fingerpicking opens up folk, bossa and most quieter songs.
You will read tab from the first lesson because it is quick and it is what the internet runs on; standard notation follows if your goals call for it. Underneath sits rhythm and timing, where most self-taught players stall without noticing. A teacher watching your picking hand catches a rushed bar as it happens, and no app does that.
Both are taught, and neither is the correct beginner instrument. An acoustic needs nothing but itself and builds finger strength fast, though the heavier strings sting for a few weeks. An electric has lower action and thinner strings, so bends and barre chords come easier, but it brings an amp and a row of controls with it. Your teacher covers gain staging, the difference between amp overdrive and a pedal, and where reverb, delay and compression help rather than hide what you play.
Practicing alone has a ceiling. Skipper's free Sunday afternoons draw a forgiving crowd, and the Ybor and Seminole Heights bar circuit runs on players who began exactly where you are. Ask your teacher which rooms take walk-up players before you go. The pattern that works is unglamorous: build the song where you can stop and fix things, then carry it into a room with other people.
Plenty of students here start from zero in their forties. Plenty are eight and want one specific song. Plenty put a guitar down after college and want back in without starting at page one. Kids get shorter, more playful sessions, adults want to understand why a thing works, and returning players need habits unpicked.
The trial is a real lesson with a real teacher, not a sales call. Tell us the songs on your list and whether there is an acoustic or an electric in the house, and we match you on that. If it fits, you keep going. If not, you are out an hour, which is a fair way to find out whether guitar lessons in Tampa belong in your week.
