Those are market rates for in-person instruction in the region, not SIRIUS prices. We publish our own rate before you book, so you can compare it against what you find locally. Most people who pick the guitar up a few times a week can strum through a simple song within four to eight weeks. Clean chord changes take a couple of months, barre chords usually a few months more, and after that there is no finish line at all - players keep improving for decades. The variable that matters most is not talent but how many short practice sessions you fit in between lessons. Fifteen focused minutes most days beats two hours every other Sunday.
Yes. You need an instrument at home, because what happens between lessons is where the progress is made. SIRIUS does not supply or rent out instruments, so you will need to buy or borrow one, but a playable beginner acoustic or electric starts around $150 to $250 new and the used market in the Tampa Bay area is generous. If you are unsure what to look for, book the trial lesson first and ask - your teacher can tell you what suits your hands, your budget and the style you are heading toward.
For one-to-one guitar instruction, yes. Your teacher watches your hands on camera, often more closely than they could from the chair beside you, and can stop on a fretting position or a picking angle without leaning over your shoulder. The practical gains outweigh the trade-offs: no drive across town in afternoon traffic, no lesson lost to a summer downpour, and a recording of the session to work from afterwards. In the mid-1980s a handful of local teenagers built the template for an entire genre: Obituary formed here in 1984, Deicide followed in 1987, and the records cut at Morrisound rewired what a downtuned electric could sound like. Both bands are still active and on the road decades later, and Hillsborough County put up a historical marker for that studio in 2025. That lineage sits beside an everyday circuit of blues players, cover bands and singer-songwriters.
The Ritz Ybor is the clearest sign the city still books guitar music: its calendar runs from hard rock to blues guitar to pop-punk, with acts such as Clutch, Christone Kingfish Ingram and Bowling for Soup among the names it draws. The Orpheum on North Nebraska Avenue leans indie and books touring bands like Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy and The Linda Lindas. Skipper's Smokehouse on Skipper Road puts free live music on its open-air stage under the oaks every Sunday afternoon. Downtown gets the Gasparilla Music Festival, which returned in 2026 at its new home on Meridian Fields.
Getting to a teacher is the harder part. The metro spreads around a bay, so a studio in Carrollwood when you live in Riverview means an hour each way, much of it in traffic that stalls the moment one of the near-daily summer thunderstorms opens up. Add the shift patterns of a hospital, airport and hospitality economy and a fixed Tuesday-at-six slot across town quietly stops happening. That is the honest reason most of our guitar lessons in Tampa run online. Your teacher stays the same wherever you are, and shifting a session costs a few clicks instead of a lost evening.
Beginners start with open chords and the unglamorous part nobody posts about: switching between them cleanly, in time, without staring at your hand. Then come strumming patterns you feel rather than count, alternate picking for single-note lines, and hammer-ons and pull-offs for the phrasing that turns an exercise into music. Barre chords arrive when your hand is ready, and fingerpicking opens up folk, bossa and most quieter songs.

Practicing alone has a ceiling. Skipper's free Sunday afternoons draw a forgiving crowd, and the Ybor and Seminole Heights bar circuit runs on players who began exactly where you are. Ask your teacher which rooms take walk-up players before you go. The pattern that works is unglamorous: build the song where you can stop and fix things, then carry it into a room with other people.
Plenty of students here start from zero in their forties. Plenty are eight and want one specific song. Plenty put a guitar down after college and want back in without starting at page one. Kids get shorter, more playful sessions, adults want to understand why a thing works, and returning players need habits unpicked.
