Most beginners can strum through a simple three- or four-chord song after roughly four to six weeks of weekly lessons plus short daily practice. Smooth chord changes take a little longer, and barre chords usually land somewhere between month three and month six. Fifteen focused minutes a day beats two hours every Sunday, and your teacher sets the order so you always know what this week's job is.
Yes, you need an instrument of your own to practice on between lessons, acoustic or electric. A playable beginner guitar starts around $150 to $250 new, and a secondhand one is fine as long as the neck is straight and the frets are sound. What the city does not have is a club circuit. Concert listings for the city point almost entirely to rooms in Hollywood, Miami and West Palm Beach, other cities and other drives. Katz Theater carries city concerts and community theater, and church and school programs around Chapel Trail, Pembroke Falls and Silver Lakes are always glad of a player who can hold down rhythm guitar. Learn at home on your own schedule, then walk into those rooms when the songs are ready.
Children can usually begin around seven, once hands fit a three-quarter instrument and attention holds half an hour. Teenagers arrive with one song and very little patience, which is workable material. Adults starting from zero do fine: the honest limit is minutes practiced per week, not age.
