<p>Two prices are worth separating. There is the price of belonging to something, which in Richmond means registering with a university or a school and accepting its calendar. And there is the price of being taught, which is what you are actually asking about. Ours is the second kind. No invoice attaches to the trial hour, and from there lessons start at $29. No term, no registration, and no obligation past the lesson you have booked.</p>
<p>The Walk of Fame in the gorge honors a man who recorded here as Georgia Tom and who later, as Thomas A. Dorsey, became a key figure in gospel music. He did not arrive in Richmond as that person, and nobody listening then could have told him what was coming. That is the ordinary situation, and it is the answer to this question. You are carrying a report on your voice, formed by somebody who was not listening carefully, and you have never had it checked by anybody who was.</p>
<p>The question is nearly always asked by an adult about themselves, so that is the case worth answering. An adult does not arrive with gaps to be filled. They arrive with habits installed years ago to solve a problem that no longer exists: a shout that got them heard across a school hall, a retreat that kept them out of trouble in a section. The work is subtraction before it is addition, and subtraction goes quickly once somebody can name what to remove. Children are welcome as well, and the Chorale draws its own line at eighteen, but outside a school nobody is checking your birth date.</p>
<p>Nobody can give you a date, and anybody who does is selling something. The most honest thing available is a comparison. The orchestra up the hill works in seasons, September to May, and a season is about the right unit here as well: long enough that a voice which was unreliable in September is usually dependable by spring, short enough that you can see the end of it from the start. Inside that stretch the gains are uneven and mostly land in the first half.</p>
<p>It helps to be precise about what a voice lesson actually consists of. It is one person producing sound and another person hearing it accurately enough to say what to change. Distance was never part of that definition; it was a side effect of teachers and students living in one town. Remove the side effect and the definition is untouched, which is the whole answer. Everything a lesson is made of survives the connection, and the audio sits inches from your mouth rather than across a room.</p>

Richmond's most famous music is lying in the sidewalk. Along South 1st Street, in the Whitewater Valley Gorge Park, medallions shaped like 78s are set into the pavement, one for each name the Starr-Gennett Foundation has inducted. Gennett Records started down there in 1917 inside the Starr Piano works, and by 1934 it had stopped. The park runs to a hundred acres of public ground. Nothing in it is set up for singing. For that you climb back up the hill, where every door has posted times.
Because the singing that still goes on here keeps office hours. The Richmond Symphony Orchestra answers its phone Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and runs a season from September to May. The one adult ensemble open to residents is a university course: the IU East Richmond Chorale rehearses Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in Vivian Auditorium, and "All community members must be 18+ to participate". The Symphony Chorus is no standing club either; it is assembled from the voice departments of Earlham and IU East together with local residents. Bethel A.M.E. on South 6th Street, organized in September 1836, worships Sundays at 11:00 a.m.
The room in the valley was built for one performance at a time. It measured "125 feet" long and "30 feet" wide, with a control room behind a double pane of glass, and whatever happened in it was captured whole. A rehearsal room is built for the opposite result. The Symphony Chorus is drawn from two college voice departments and the surrounding town, and a group assembled that way exists to blend, which means no single voice in it gets heard on its own. One room was arranged for sale and the other for blend. Neither was ever arranged to tell one singer what their own instrument is doing, and that takes a third kind of room, holding two people.
Some of this really can be picked up in a choir; there is no sense pretending otherwise. Sitting in a section teaches you to hold a line against other lines. It does not teach the register change, where a voice hands over and untrained singers either shove or vanish. Underneath that sits breath, a mechanical business that improves fast once somebody names the fault. Then tuning under pressure, then stamina across a whole program rather than one song, and last tone, a consequence of those four and not a target in itself.
Working with SIRIUS runs in a fixed order. First comes the match: a coach chosen for whatever you mean to sing, be it the sort of thing this valley is known for or something with no connection to it. Then an hour, uninvoiced, ending in a plain account of the voice's strengths and its faults. Then, if you carry on, a plan with real targets in it, and lessons start at $29. After that the hours move around your week for as long as you want them.
Whether a recording is worth anything depends on who is meant to hear it. If somebody is meant to buy it, the rules of the valley apply: a whole room caught at once, and at the end an object somebody has to want. If it only ever reaches you and your coach on a Thursday, none of those rules matter and a different one does - that you can find the bar you were told about without relying on memory. Everything from the hour stays with you afterward, which turns a weekly correction into something you can work on the other six days.
In April 1923 King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band came to Richmond, and the second cornet was a twenty-one-year-old Louis Armstrong making the first recordings of his career; his first substantial solo sits on "Chimes Blues". In February 1924 the Wolverine Orchestra cut Bix Beiderbecke's first sides here. On October 31, 1927 Hoagy Carmichael recorded "Star Dust", issued as Gennett 6311 and added to the National Recording Registry in 2004. It was never only jazz: the Walk of Fame honors Gene Autry and Charley Patton alongside the gospel ensemble the Pace Jubilee Singers. A great many musicians made their first records in this small Indiana town.
Asking which level you belong in is the wrong question here, because the answer is decided by enrollment rather than by your voice. At Richmond High School the Chamber Choir is "an audition based choir that consists of some of the most experienced singers" and the Symphonic Choir is "an entry level choir" - a sensible arrangement for people who attend the school. The Chorale requires you to be eighteen and to register with a university. A lesson asks neither question. A ten-year-old, a teenager whose voice is moving, and an adult who has not sung since school are three different pieces of work.
Look at the hours this town publishes. The orchestra office runs Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On East Main Street the box office runs Tuesday to Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed Mondays. Roseview Transit runs "Monday-Friday, 6:15am - 5:45pm" and is listed as closed on Saturday and Sunday. Rehearsal is Tuesday between 6:00 and 7:45 p.m. or it is next week. Not one of those hours was set with your shift pattern in mind, and not one of them shifts. An hour you set yourself carries no such fixture.
Earlham puts real money behind singing, and the shape of it is worth reading. Performance scholarships run between "$1000 and $3000 per year", and a separate award "covers the lesson fee for one semester" but "must be applied for each semester". Both are for people enrolled at the college, and a first lesson need not be a financial decision at all. It hands you one plain fact you did not have that morning: the point at which the breath gives out.
This town remembers music outdoors and produces it indoors, on a schedule. Try that the other way round. The remembering can wait - the medallions will still be in the sidewalk next spring - and the producing can start this week, at a time you pick, without registering with anybody. A hundred years ago people traveled to Richmond because this was where the wax was. Now the recording is wherever you are.
