Anderson is the seat of Madison County, Indiana, spread along the White River about forty miles up the interstate from Indianapolis. It boomed on natural gas in the 1880s, built cars and car parts for most of the twentieth century, and through all of it kept an unusually deep musical life for a city its size - a 1929 movie palace downtown, a symphony orchestra, a university with a school of music, and the gospel tradition of the Church of God, which has carried the name of this town since 1905.
Start with the Paramount on Meridian Street. It opened in 1929 as one of John Eberson's atmospheric theaters, a Spanish courtyard with a ceiling full of stars, and it still plays its original Page organ - one of only three left in the buildings they were installed in. The Anderson Symphony Orchestra performs there and at Reardon Auditorium across town. Anderson University runs a school of music with four vocal ensembles. The children's choir and youth chorale have been training singers since 1992. And on Friday evenings from June into late September, the city puts free concerts on the stage at Dickmann Town Center.
