<p>A price is a description of what is being sold, and the local ones describe very different things. The children's choir at 315 Franklin Street costs "$610 for the year (plus a $60, non-refundable registration fee)" and buys a season in an ensemble. A school choir costs nothing and buys a place on a schedule. We sell an hour of one person's attention, so we price it by the hour: your trial hour is free and lessons after it open at $29. No season, no registration fee, no year.</p>
<p>It depends entirely on what you mean, and the two meanings pull apart. Meaning one: nobody ever taught you. That describes nearly everybody who sends in a video, and the remedy is dull and reliable. If you mean something is physically wrong with your voice, that is rare and a coach will notice it in the first hour. The Philharmonic Chorus has run since 1987 on that distinction: no audition, only a singer who can follow a score and keep showing up. If reading is what stands between you and a Monday evening, it is a teachable skill and no verdict on your voice.</p>
<p>Work the ladder from the top down instead. The Chancel Choir at 618 8th Street takes "all adult and high school age singers," with no upper limit in its description. Below that sits a high school with six ensembles, and below that a children's choir with a five-month assessment window. Nobody publishes a ceiling; voices keep responding to training into old age, and adults who start late often move quickly because they know what they want. One arrangement fits every rung at once: a coach, an hour, your voice.</p>
<p>Asking for a number invites a bad answer, and the reason is worth stating. A voice is not one skill improving at one rate; it is half a dozen, on unrelated clocks, and a single figure averages what should never be averaged. Worse, the question presumes a finish line. None exists - the school choirs here audition in 2027 for a year beginning after that, and the singers who get in will still be working on the same problems in five years. The useful version is smaller: what changes first, and how would I know? Breath, and you would know because you would stop running out.</p>
<p>This city already accepts the premise. The high school here fills five of its six choirs by video submission, and nobody calls that an inferior way to hear a voice. A live lesson does everything the video does and adds what the video never had: somebody answering. One microphone close to one singer beats the twentieth row, and a coach who can stop you mid-phrase is worth more than a panel who cannot. And if something else owns your Monday, this is how the singing happens regardless.</p>

The biggest singing door in Columbus opens onto a camera. Columbus North runs six choirs and fills five by audition, and the audition is not an audition in the old sense: "Auditions will be completed virtually, through video submission." The page carrying that sentence is headed 2027-28, for a school year beginning after the spring it names. The adult chorus of the city orchestra sets no audition whatever and asks the opposite - be in the room on a Monday, several times over, and see whether it suits you.
The Philharmonic Chorus has met since 1987, and its terms are plain: "Participation in the Chorus does not require an audition," and singers are urged "to attend several rehearsals simply to 'check out' the ensemble." Rehearsals run Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. in the second-floor rehearsal room of First United Methodist Church at 618 8th Street. The orchestra of the same organization runs a dated calendar with an application deadline of Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Two ways in, built on opposite principles: one weighs a file, the other counts Mondays.
A video audition listens once and reaches a verdict. A weekly lesson listens fifty times and reaches no verdict at all - the whole inversion is there, and people find it hard to believe until they have done it. Nobody in an hour with a vocal coach is deciding whether you get in. The hour goes on finding out which things your voice manages easily, which give way under strain, and which single correction would move the most. Sixty minutes belonging to one voice, once a week.
A working hour holds a fixed quantity, and its distribution is worth knowing. Breath comes first and takes the largest share, because everything downstream depends on it. Tone follows and costs little once the air is right. Stamina is cheap per session and expensive in total, accumulating across months. Tuning takes minutes a week and repays them at once. The register handover takes the rest and keeps taking it. Fluent score-reading goes on the same ledger, in the same currency.
A school choir picks the singers it needs for the ensemble it is building. SIRIUS starts from the other end and builds around the singer who arrives. The coach gets chosen against your instrument and your songs; the plan gets written down and stays yours; hours are booked, moved and added online instead of being fixed by a term; progress is logged session by session. The opening lesson is unpriced and lessons after it start at $29, so the decision costs you an hour of your time and nothing else - roughly what recording the video would have taken.
The video submission has a real virtue: recording yourself is useful, and most singers never do it. It lacks the second half. A file sent to a panel produces a decision and nothing else - no reply, no annotation, no next step. In a lesson the recording runs the other way. Sound built around a singing voice preserves a whispered consonant and a line that trails away; the take waits in your workspace next to the exercises and the written record; and Thursday can hear Monday again. Same technology. Opposite purpose.
Judson Erne Auditorium at Columbus North, 1400 25th St., seats 1,021 after its 2017 renovation and hosts the Philharmonic's Philharmonster on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Nugent-Custer Performance Hall at The Commons, 300 Washington Street, takes "425 seated (round tables) or 700 theater style." First Christian Church at 531 Fifth Street, dedicated on May 31, 1942, hosts two more concerts of that season. Second Baptist Church at 1328 9th St has occupied its building, a former theater, since 1913. The Mill Race Theatre Company has been staging musicals here since 1969.
Follow the published route from youngest to oldest and watch the gate change shape. The children's choir at 315 Franklin Street holds "vocal assessments" by appointment across a five-month window. The high school runs a video channel opening in spring for the following year. The Philharmonic Chorus sets no audition and asks two things openly: that you read music, and that you keep coming back on Mondays. Chancel Choir at 618 8th Street rehearses Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Four gates, four mechanisms, every one a rule about groups - so why would any of them say where you begin?
Monday evening is the singing night here, and it is genuinely crowded: the children's choirs at Helen Haddad Hall from 5:15 p.m., the Philharmonic Chorus at 618 8th Street from 7:00 p.m. If your Monday belongs to something else - a shift, a child, a commute - what remains on the published calendar is a Thursday choir at 618 8th Street and not much besides. An hour that reaches you wherever you are has no such Monday. Book it for a Sunday morning or a Wednesday evening, and move it again next month when the week rearranges itself.
Picture the moment the video gets recorded. Somebody sets a phone on a music stand in a bedroom, sings the excerpt eleven times, keeps the least embarrassing take and sends it away to be judged by people who will never write back. It is a strange way to meet your own voice, and the most common way in this city. A first lesson puts the same singer in the same room with the terms reversed: somebody is listening live, they answer immediately, and nothing is being decided. One hour.
Add the two halves together. Columbus judges at a distance, in files and forms and deadlines a year out, and it welcomes without judging on one crowded weeknight. Between those, the thing missing is small and specific: an hour in which somebody listens closely and then tells you what they heard. The hour does not compete with the Monday chorus or the school ensembles; it makes both of them easier. Book the hour, then go and use it wherever you like singing best.
