<p>Here is the order of it. The Community Chorale asks $75 a semester, covering music rental, licensing and one ticket to the closing concert. The conservatory publishes hall rental rates and its lesson policies in print. Then there is us. Lessons here begin at $29, and the trial costs nothing. Length and frequency move the number after that, along with whether you come weekly or every other week. A semester and an hour are different purchases, and it is worth knowing which one you came for.</p>
<p>Two printed claims sit side by side here. The Chordsmen say an average voice and no reading are no bar to joining. The conservatory says no audition is required for either of its choirs. Both are true, and neither is a verdict on your voice, because neither group was listening to you by yourself. What gets called being unable to sing is usually one identifiable thing, and it is nearly always physical. The first hour is where somebody names it out loud.</p>
<p>The numbers published here are grades. The conservatory takes children into its choir from grade 2 and keeps them to grade 11, and opens its adult chorale from grade 8. The parish youth choir runs from kindergarten through grade 8. A cohort is a way of filling a room, and all three of those are cohorts. A voice is not a cohort. It turns up in one body, at one stage, on one particular Tuesday. Which of those markers was ever about a voice?</p>
<p>The conservatory counts its year in Mondays and explains the arithmetic in print: Fall Session 1 has six of them because of Labor Day on September 7, and Fall Session 2 has eight to make that day up. Somebody reconciled a calendar so nobody would lose a lesson. Progress runs on the same currency, counted repetitions. A handful of Mondays is where the guessing at pitch stops. A season is where a replaced habit starts holding on its own. After that the count stops being useful. Counting Mondays tells you more than counting months.</p>
<p>Yes, with one honest exception. A room gives you three things a line cannot: the feel of a section, the sound of a hall, and the discipline of holding your part while three others move against it. Tuesday at 1501 Marshall Street takes visitors. A line carries one voice being listened to closely, and a lesson is not much more than that. Video also keeps the appointment when the week goes wrong. Three things, and the rest travels.</p>

In Manitowoc the number of the Sunday tells you the address. St. Francis of Assisi runs three worship sites and sorts its four adult choirs by the date and the building: the women's choir sings the 9:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at the Marshall Site, a men's choir the 9:30 a.m. Mass on the same Sundays at the Waldo Site, and two more take the 2nd and 4th Sundays. A few blocks from there, First Presbyterian and Peace United Church of Christ hold one 10:00 a.m. service together and move it: 1st and 2nd Sundays on Waldo Blvd, the rest on North 8th Street. A new singer here asks which Sunday before asking when.
The rotation is one thing this city puts in print, and far from the whole. The Clipper City Chordsmen, a barbershop chorus for men, rehearse Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. at 1501 Marshall Street and call themselves "nearly 40 members of all ages from all walks of life." The Community Chorale meets Monday evenings at the Capitol Civic Centre and asks $75 a semester. The Holy Family Conservatory, founded in 1925, runs a children's choir Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and prints "No audition is required." Four standing arrangements, four calendars. A weekly hour carries a date too, and the date names no building.
Ask a Tuesday rehearsal what your own voice does and the answer comes back about the chorus. Members working through the words of a newer song in the Early Bird half hour, from 6:30 p.m., are building a shared sound, the point of the evening. The question about one voice has no slot in it. An hour built around a single voice is where that question fits. Your coach hears what happens to your voice above the break, names it, and hands you something to work on before next week. If you want both, take both.
Grant the choirs their due: they teach a great deal, by repetition. Stamina comes first in lessons, since a voice that runs out halfway down the page cannot be judged on anything else. Then breath, where the stamina actually lives. Then the crossing from chest into head voice. Then tuning, the quickest thing on the list to fix. Then tone, the slowest, and the one you came for. The conservatory choirs ask for none of it at the door: they print that no audition is required.
When the Manitowoc Symphony played its first concert in May 1952, a local women's group sang with it, organized and led by Lucie Westen. Somebody had to gather those singers before there was a chorus to hear, and that part of the work has not changed. SIRIUS puts one coach on the music you actually want and leaves that coach there, week after week, with the next step written down. Nobody invoices you for the opening lesson. Two people in the room.
A recording is a second listener with no memory of its own. The Capitol Civic Centre opened in 1921, was restored in 1987 and renovated again in 2019, and much of what happened on that stage survives only where somebody wrote it down. Your lesson gets written down by itself. The audio here is engineered for a singing voice, so a breath under the note arrives together with the note, and you can play the hour back with the exercises and the summary beside it. The Tuesday you finally got the register change is available again on Sunday.
The Capitol Civic Centre at 913 S. 8th Street seats a thousand across a floor and two balconies and keeps a published list of Arts Partners, county organizations producing at least one event there a year. The Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra is on that list and plays three dated performances this season, on October 3 at 7:30 p.m., December 20 at 3:00 p.m. and March 19 at 7:30 p.m. On Calumet Avenue the Holy Family Conservatory holds the 464-seat Endries Performance Hall and counts its academic year in Mondays as well as weeks.
What fits depends on what you are after. For a child, the conservatory takes any student in grades 2 to 11 with an interest in singing, no audition, Mondays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. For a teenager or an adult, the same house opens its Chorale from grade 8 upward on the same terms, and prints "date and time TBA" where the rehearsal should be. The Chordsmen say an average voice and no reading are no bar to joining. Each line there sorts by cohort. Where in that list does your own voice get looked at?
The dates above belong to other people's calendars. Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. on Marshall Street. Monday evenings at the Capitol Civic Centre. Monday from 6:00 p.m. at the conservatory. On weekdays the box office is reachable from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and it opens an hour before performances. A weekly hour keeps none of those edges. It has one date, and the date does not change house when the month turns.
The Resurrection Funeral Choir sings at each of the three worship sites, and where the rehearsal schedule goes it prints two words: "No rehearsals." A group usually builds toward a performance; that one has the performance and nothing in front of it. Beginning to sing works that way too, and more often than anybody assumes. The preparation gets built around whatever the first hour finds. So book it and sing something you can already hold together, a hymn, a pop chorus, half of anything.
Manitowoc publishes its singing carefully. A Sunday number gives you a building. A Tuesday half hour before the rehearsal proper gives you the words to a new song. A Monday in September gives you the first of six, with a make-up Monday added in December. And a voice that wants to know what it can actually do gets none of those, because none of them was built for that job. A weekly hour was. It has one date, no building and one person listening. The other arrangements will still be there on Marshall Street on Tuesday.
