In the Coulee Region an hour of private instruction commonly falls in a $50 to $90 bracket, with the university-adjacent teachers nearer the top of it. Because the first SIRIUS session carries no cost, the comparison you actually end up making is between teachers rather than between numbers.
Very nearly everyone, and a good many people get considerably further than they expect. The Coulee Chordsmen have been admitting members since 1947 and the Boychoir since 1974 on exactly that assumption. What divides singers is generally whether anybody ever bothered to correct them early on.
Seven is a workable starting point when the lessons are kept short and the child leaves wanting the next one. Adolescents should keep going through the voice change with somebody watching for strain. Adults turn up at every age, often with a school choir thirty years behind them and nothing since.
Six to eight weeks of steady work usually shows up on a recording. The consistency - sounding much the same on a flat Tuesday as on a good day - is closer to a year away. Everything after that is refinement: slower going, and the reason people keep booking.
They work. What has to travel is your sound going one way and a demonstration coming back, and a solid connection carries both. The regional argument is January: the lesson at your own kitchen table happens during a blizzard, and the one across the river does not.

La Crosse stands where the Black and La Crosse rivers empty into the Mississippi, backed by the bluffs of the Driftless Area, with Grandad Bluff about six hundred feet above the rooftops and three states in the view from the top. The French named the place for the stick game the Ho-Chunk and Dakota played on the prairie here. Nathan Myrick set up a trading post in 1841, the city incorporated in 1856, and German families arrived in enough numbers to shape the century that followed - Gottlieb Heileman among them, whose brewery gave the town Old Style and, eventually, an Oktoberfest.
Very few cities this size have this much organized singing going on inside them. The Coulee Chordsmen, a barbershop chorus, have rehearsed here since 1947. The La Crosse Chamber Chorale, founded in 1986, auditions each May and keeps a deliberately small roster of thirty-odd voices. The Boychoir dates from 1974 and the Girlchoir from 1987, both teaching sight-singing and individual vocal work rather than simply handing out parts. Orchestral music in the city goes back to 1898, and the La Crosse Symphony has played continuously since 1941 at the Viterbo Fine Arts Center on Jackson Street. And Viterbo University itself has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1942, with a Bachelor of Music in voice performance and a conservatory-style musical theater degree whose students take one-on-one voice lessons twice a week.
That last detail is worth sitting with. The serious programs in this town have concluded that singers need individual attention at that frequency, and they are not wrong about it. A chorus will place you in a section and let you blend, which is pleasant and also how a great many singers quietly stop improving. A single teacher tracking how your voice behaves when it is tired, cold or in front of people is where that gets solved.
Support comes first and takes the longest to feel natural. Then tuning that does not wobble when the room goes quiet, and an upper range that keeps its body instead of thinning out. If you sing with other people there is blend and sight-reading stacked on top of that; if you sing alone, projection and the phrasing choices that make a lyric land.
Coaches are selected for the student rather than drawn from whoever has an opening. The opening hour is free of charge. You set the times and you move them when the week demands it. Beginners and working singers both get their hour's worth, for entirely different reasons.

Oktoberfest USA has run since 1961 and claims the longest unbroken run of any Oktoberfest in the Midwest, four days of polka bands each September. The Great River Folk Festival marked fifty years this August with three stages and a songwriting contest. Moon Tunes puts free local music at the Riverside Park bandshell through the summer - the current bandshell went up in 2020, built of whole oak by the Rotary Club. The Cappella Performing Arts Center on King Street runs music education out of an 1886 church. And this city has quietly produced composers: Robert E. Kreutz, born here in 1922, wrote Gift of Finest Wheat, a hymn sung in Catholic parishes worldwide, while Robert Moevs and Wallace Berry both went from La Crosse into serious American musical careers.
Our students live on the North Side and the South Side, out in Onalaska, and across the water in La Crescent - children, teenagers, adults who already sing somewhere on Sundays, and adults who have never sung in front of another human being.
Between hospital shifts, a student calendar and four months of genuine winter, a fixed appointment somewhere across town is the first thing to fall through. A lesson that comes to you does not have that weakness.
Take the opening session. You will finish it knowing one specific thing to work on, which is more than most singers arrive at in a season.
In a city with a barbershop chorus dating from 1947, two children's choirs and a university that teaches voice twice a week, singing is a perfectly normal thing for an adult to do. Start under the bluff, at home.
