A private teacher in southern Wisconsin will usually be somewhere between $50 and $90 an hour, less for a half-hour slot. The SIRIUS difference sits at the front of that - you pay nothing for the opening session, and no contract is waiting behind it.
Almost anyone can be taught to sing well enough to enjoy it, and a great many people can go considerably further than that. What sounds like a gift is usually a coordination that somebody learned early. The rest of us just learn it later.
Around six or seven for children, when a short lesson can still hold their attention. Through the teenage years a coach who understands the changing voice matters more than at any other stage. Adults start whenever the idea stops going away.
You will hear something inside two months. Getting a voice to hold up through a full choir rehearsal or a long set takes roughly a year of weekly work. After that the gains are smaller and, oddly, more satisfying.
The teaching itself does not need a shared room - it needs a coach who can hear you clearly and show you the fix. Wisconsin winters make the practical case on their own: a lesson at home happens in February, and one across town frequently does not.

It anchors its own metropolitan area rather than orbiting Madison or Milwaukee, calls itself Wisconsin's Park Place with more than two thousand five hundred acres of parkland to back the claim, and has spent the years since the assembly plant closed rebuilding the riverfront downtown rather than talking about what used to be there. The town square, the footbridge and the riverwalk are finished. What comes next on the old plant site is still an open question, and the city is honest about that.
Because a city this size with a six-hundred-seat theater of its own is doing something right. The Janesville Performing Arts Center on South Main is an independent nonprofit and the working home of fifteen local arts groups, which means the stage is genuinely available to people who live here. Music at the Marv fills the pavilion in Lower Courthouse Park with free concerts on thirteen Tuesday evenings each summer. The Rotary Botanical Gardens run their own live music through the season. And the Rock County Fair still holds a singing contest every July, which is a better first audience than most cities offer.
Nothing gets taught from a script. Your coach spends the opening sessions finding out how your voice behaves - rested, tired, nervous, pushed - and builds from there. Two students who sound similar on the first day usually need entirely different work by the third.
Support and breath come first, then intonation that survives a room full of people, then a tone that stays even as you climb. Beyond that: blend if you sing with others, projection if you sing alone, and the small technical fixes that stop a voice from tiring halfway through.
