The Maine Academy of Modern Music charges $100 a month, booked through the Bangor Parks and Recreation desk: Saturdays, 75 minutes, September through June, at the PAL Center on Watchmaker Street. That covers a band and a room and a Saturday. No invoice follows that first hour, and lessons start at $29 once you go on.
The Chancel Choir at Hammond Street Congregational Church says sight-reading is encouraged and not required. The people who tell you they cannot sing have usually been heard only inside a crowd, and a crowd reports nothing back. If nobody has ever listened to you alone, nobody has told you anything either. In a first lesson your coach hears one phrase, names the thing that moved, and gives you something to do with it. Usually the sentence stops being true right there.
Eight to eighteen at the Bangor Area Youth Choirs, eight to eighteen at the youth orchestras, seven through adult on Main Street. An age in a notice is a rule for building a group, a number that describes a roster. Whoever is assembling the group needs it; a coach teaching one person does not. The pace of a first month is decided by the voice that turns up to it, and nothing printed on a wall has a say in that.
Six weeks is what the Bangor Area Youth Choirs call a term, and it is a fair unit for this. The band that has played since 1859 counts in seasons, and a voice needs nothing like that long to sound different. The quick gains and the slow ones are not the ones you would guess, and the first change tends to show up in a song you already know well.
A single ride on the Community Connector is $1.50, and the driver cannot make change, so the exact fare has to be in your hand before you board. A rehearsal moves you to the music; an online lesson moves the music to you, and the one thing it asks is a connection that holds. Your coach hears the phrase, names the syllable that slipped, and you take it again before it fades.

The Bangor Band rehearses every Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Class of 1944 Hall on the University of Maine campus in Orono, and plays its concerts back in Bangor. The Bangor Symphony Orchestra reverses it: office at 80 Exchange Street in Bangor, Masterworks at the Collins Center for the Arts in Orono. Running between the two towns is the Community Connector, a bus service the City of Bangor owns and operates. Singing here means counting the road as well as the hour.
Singing is well organized in Bangor, and most of it is organized by somebody else. The Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras run four ensembles through Thursday, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., and take qualified students from 8 to 18. The Bangor Area Youth Choirs take singers aged 8 to 18 in six-week sessions in the Norman Minsky Lecture Hall at the public library, attached to no church and no school. Each one sits in a set room on a set evening, and getting there is part of it.
The Concertino Strings at the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras meet Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., hold no audition, and ask nothing of a new player except reading in D major. The hour starts with a section, narrows to a stand, and stops there. With SIRIUS the hour has nobody else's part in it. Your coach finds where the support gives out, names the bar, and says what to do about it.
The work starts wherever the phrase gives out. Two bars from the end is where the air goes for most people, and it shows as a pitch that sags. Breath gets built so the line arrives. Vowels get shaped so a word survives at volume. Entries get cleaner, and that is largely a matter of knowing the note before you make it. The move up into head voice gets worked until nobody hears it happen. None of that is a complete list, and no coach writes one before hearing you sing.
The Penobscot Theatre Company teaches private voice one-on-one at 51A Main Street, an hour a week, ages 7 through adult, billed by the month from February to May. A fixed term suits some people and strands others. With SIRIUS a shift in your week is answered by a shift in the hour, and a second one is no harder than the first. The plan you work from is written where you can read it. The first hour is not charged for at all.
A rehearsal room is a place where a phrase happens once. The Tuesday in Orono happens once; the Wednesday at Hammond Street Congregational Church, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the Chancel Choir, happens once; a recording happens whenever you open it. SIRIUS teaches over a video link, and the workspace behind it is built around sung tone. A speech codec throws away the softest part of a range, and that is where the work usually sits. A hall gives you a sound no recording can produce; the workspace gives you the same phrase twice, which no hall has ever managed.
The Bangor Band has been playing since 1859 and lists 108 names for 2026 under Dr. Philip B. Edelman. On Tuesday, June 23, 2026 it plays the Summer Music Series on the library lawn from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the 24th held in reserve against rain. In November it moves indoors: the Harvest Concert at Peakes Auditorium on Sunday, November 1 at 3:00 p.m., and the Veteran's Day Concert at the Cole Land Transportation Museum on November 11 at 1:00 p.m. The Bangor Symphony Orchestra opens its 131st season with five Masterworks concerts under Lucas Richman, in a hall seating 1,435 that stands in Orono. Its own office is at 80 Exchange Street in Bangor, and it keeps a second stage at Peakes Auditorium inside the high school.
The Bangor Area Youth Choirs will take a seven-year-old with the artistic director's consent; the printed floor is eight. The youth orchestras use the same span, and the Dramatic Academy on Main Street runs from seven through adult. Two different floors, seven and eight, printed by three different organizations. Someone who stopped at school and started again decades later works from the same short list as anyone else, at their own speed.
The Community Connector runs Monday through Saturday and never on Sunday, with the system on the road from 6:15 a.m. onward Route O's last trip reaches the Transit Center at 6:50 p.m., late enough for a seven o'clock rehearsal only if the rehearsal is on this side of the town line. With SIRIUS the hour has no last bus behind it. Sunday is no obstruction either.
The question is not whether there are places in Bangor to sing. There are, most evenings of the week, and each of them has to be reached. The first lesson is a description, written down, of what your voice already does. It is booked for an evening you choose, and no part of it involves leaving the house.
Two of the rooms that matter here stand outside the city limits, and the bus that reaches them is a city department. Bangor puts the singing and the room in different places, each on somebody else's schedule. The band will be in Orono again on Tuesday. Your hour will be wherever you are.
