<p>One teaching price is published in Lewiston, and its unit is the instructive part. Bates lists applied music at $630 a semester for eleven 45-minute lessons, priced and organized by the term, with an instructor's permission required before you may enroll. We work by a different unit: lessons start from $29, with a trial before the first of them that we do not bill.</p>
<p>Yes, in nearly every case, and the chorale's own audition quietly makes the argument. It asks for scales and for echoed patterns rather than for artistry, because what it needs to establish is your range and whether you can reproduce what you have just heard. Both of those are trainable. So is breath, so is the register change, so is intonation. Talent shortens the road. It is not what decides who may walk it.</p>
<p>Seven or thereabouts will do for a child, with the lesson kept short and the songs chosen by them. Upward from there, no cut-off worth mentioning applies. Provision in Lewiston sits mostly at the adult end anyway: the community chorale admits by audition, the college choir names students, staff and faculty, and the applied lessons at Bates are priced and organized by the semester, as a course. A private hour carries no cohort with it, so a nine-year-old and a sixty-year-old both begin wherever their voice actually is.</p>
<p>A fair local yardstick is the chorale's season, which runs from a concert in November to one in May. Inside a span of that shape the sequence is dependable. Breath control shifts first, within a few weeks. Tuning firms over the couple of months after that, which is roughly the ground an audition would cover. Tone develops slowly and never quite stops. Sight-reading fluently enough to learn a part unaccompanied is slowest to arrive, and it is what divides a confident singer from a self-sufficient one.</p>
<p>They do work, and here they resolve a specific difficulty. The one documented chorale rehearsal is over a bridge, and it begins after the last bus of the day has gone; an hour taken at home is simply available. Musically, video suits work of this kind: the only thing it has to carry is you. For a hearing that asks you to echo a piano, that is exactly the right rehearsal.</p>

There is nothing to prepare, the chorale tells anyone who asks about its audition. You sing scales up and down so the range can be heard, you echo patterns played at the piano, and from that somebody settles which part you belong in. Twenty pieces held in memory will not help you there. That, rather than the concert that follows it, is what a weekly lesson exists for.
Because nearly every documented route into singing here asks to hear you on your own first. The community chorale admits by audition. The college choir auditions too, and describes itself as open to Bates students, staff and faculty. Even the gentlest of those hearings puts one person beside a piano with no accompaniment and nowhere to hide. Preparing for that is not something any of them provides; it happens beforehand and in private, or it does not happen.
In a full chorus the part you sing belongs to your section, not to you. A teacher of your own has no roll to check and no line to hold. Bates draws that line differently for players than for singers: its orchestra names the Lewiston-Auburn community in its own description, and its choir page names students, staff and faculty. Your hour is governed by neither sentence, only by what your voice did this week.
Begin with the two qualities the audition actually measures. Range, meaning the honest distance from your lowest easy note to your highest, and accuracy, meaning whether the figure you just heard is the figure you sang back. Both move quickly and both can be measured. Behind them sit breath, so a phrase arrives at the end the composer wrote for it, and the point where your voice changes gear, which stops being a jolt once it has been practiced. Reading comes last.
A teacher chosen for the music you mean to sing, rather than allotted to you off a list. Ahead of the first lesson, an hour for which nothing is charged. Times you choose and change yourself, no small matter in a two-city arrangement where the thing you want may sit on the opposite bank. And no term, no enrollment window, no section to be sorted into before you may begin.
Two practical matters. The audio first: an ordinary call is tuned to carry speech, and the compression that makes talking legible strips out the overtones a singing teacher needs to hear. Ours leaves sung tone intact. Then the screen: your pitch appears against the note you intended while that note is still sounding, which is the quickest correction anybody can be given. Each session is kept with its exercises and a summary, so Thursday's work is to hand on Sunday, whether or not anything else is.
Lewiston was incorporated as a town in 1795 and as a city in 1863, and it grew around the falls of the Androscoggin, where Benjamin Bates built a mill in 1850 whose profits went on to found the college that carries his name. The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Ash Street was begun in 1906 for a parish organized in 1870 by Franco-Canadian mill and shoe workers, finished in 1936 and dedicated in 1938; it seats 2,200 and holds two Casavant organs from that dedication year, the gallery instrument a four-manual and the largest church organ in Maine. Recitals on it begin at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesdays and cost nothing to attend. A choir at the parish sings in French, Kirundi and Kinyarwanda, and Mass in Kirundi is celebrated monthly in the chapel below. The Franco Center, St. Mary's Church until 2000, seats 428 in its performance hall, and The Public Theatre works out of the Ritz, which opened on January 30, 1940.
A child of about seven is old enough, so long as the lessons stay short. Teenagers gain the most, because the instrument is altering underneath them and it helps enormously to have somebody naming what is happening as it happens. Adults meet no barrier at either end. The youngest of the three are catered for somewhere in town at least: Tree Street Youth on Howe Street runs programs for ages four to twenty-four that are described as taking in music among the arts, though no class time or fee is published.
Consider where the singing actually sits. The chorale rehearses on Thursday evenings, and it rehearses in Auburn, on Pleasant Street, across the river. The buses finish at 6:15 p.m. on weekdays and 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday has no service whatever. Attending anything therefore means a car and a bridge, or a ride arranged beforehand with somebody else. A lesson that reaches your own address requires neither, and it can be moved when the week rearranges itself around you.
The trial hour is free and demands nothing in advance. Sing one thing through and receive a plain description of how far your range reaches, how steady the tuning is, and where the gear change falls. If a chorale audition is what you have in view, that is the very ground such a hearing covers, except that nobody is deciding anything about you at the end of it. If it is not, you will still learn what twelve months of patient weekly effort might be worth to you.
There is real singing in this city: a basilica with the largest church organ in the state, a chorale running since 1972, a parish choir working in three languages. Nearly all of it wants to hear you on your own before letting you in. The chorale's audition asks for scales, and nothing in Lewiston teaches you scales; that gap is the whole of the case for an hour a week.
