Sooner than most people assume. Hands-together playing usually shows up in the first few weeks, with the left holding a bass note or simple chord while the right carries the melody. Real independence, two different rhythms at once, takes longer, often a few months of short, regular sessions. Fifteen focused minutes a day will move you further than one long stretch on Sunday.
For learning, no. What counts is the action: full-size keys that are weighted and respond to how hard you strike them, so you build finger strength and control over dynamics. The Houston Symphony played its first concert on June 21, 1913 and now presents over 130 concerts a year, most of them at Jones Hall, the 2,912-seat downtown room completed in October 1966. Rice University's Shepherd School of Music puts students onto a stage holding a 1965 New York Steinway D signed by Horowitz, Rubinstein and Van Cliburn. Piano runs underneath almost all of it.
The city gives a student somewhere to aim. Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet share the Wortham Theater Center, opened in 1987 with entirely private funding during the oil bust; HGO has since staged 91 premieres, 76 of them world-premiere operas, and its shelf holds an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. The University of Houston's Moores School of Music runs an 800-seat opera house with a Frank Stella mural, and Rice's Stude Concert Hall seats up to 1,000. A good piano teacher in Houston uses that calendar: hear a recital Thursday, bring what you noticed to Monday's lesson.
The first months are about the hands more than the page. Humidity is the slower problem: Steinway recommends 40 to 60 percent relative humidity and 68 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit, which on the Gulf Coast means running a dehumidifier or in-piano humidity system much of the year. For plenty of households here, a portable digital instrument is simply the practical choice — weighted keys, no tuning bill, and light enough for two people to carry upstairs.

A child is ready once they can settle briefly, take one instruction at a time and reach the keys without straining — for some that lands at five, for others at seven. Adults are the group we hear from most, and their obstacle is rarely talent; it's the calendar, plus a memory of quitting as a teenager.
