Usually not the spare bedroom. It tends to be the smallest and hardest-surfaced room in the house and the furthest from everyone else, and practice done in isolation quietly fades out. Put the instrument where the family already gathers, angle it so the player faces into the room instead of a wall, and use headphones on a digital when someone needs quiet. Leave it open.
Short and frequent beats long and rare. Five sessions of fifteen or twenty minutes will do more than one heroic push at the weekend, because the hands consolidate in the gaps between sittings. Attach practice to something already fixed, straight after breakfast or before the television goes on, and agree the windows in advance so they are not renegotiated daily. On impossible days, four careful bars still counts.
The student sits down at the instrument and the lesson opens in a browser tab, with nothing to install first. Most teachers begin with a warm-up, listen to last week's piece, then work closely on the passages that are not yet secure, demonstrating and playing along. New material usually arrives near the end. Afterwards the notes, sheet music and any recordings appear in your online workspace.
Look at attention span rather than age. If your child can stay with one activity for ten or fifteen minutes, follow a two-step instruction and reach the keys without stretching, that is ready enough. Being able to read words first is not a prerequisite; plenty of children pick up notation and letters in parallel. Add the Keyboard Area at the University of Texas at Arlington and a district that puts every child through general music, and piano lessons in Arlington have somewhere to lead.
A student here can hear live keyboard playing for free. UT Arlington's Clavier Recital Series, established in 2004, runs monthly on a Tuesday in Irons Recital Hall, and the department states that all recitals are free and open to the public — the performers are its own piano, organ and harpsichord students. Watching someone a few years older work through a piece in public makes the path look shorter.
The first weeks are mostly about the hands themselves — a rounded, relaxed shape, a loose wrist, fingers pressing from the knuckle, not the whole arm. You learn to take in two staves at once, the lower line generally belonging to the left hand and the upper to the right, which feels strange for a while and then stops being hard. You build the physical vocabulary inside almost everything you will play: five-finger patterns, scales, broken chords. You count out loud, and keep counting once the music gets distracting. Later come the pedal, dynamics, and the judgment that makes a phrase mean something. A beginner often manages a short piece with both hands inside the first couple of months, tracking practice habits more than talent.
Almost nobody has a music room. The instrument ends up in the living room beside the television, or in a back bedroom doubling as a home office and a guest room. The spare room is the obvious choice and often the wrong one: usually the smallest, the hardest-surfaced and the furthest from where the family spends its evenings — and practice done alone at the end of a hallway quietly stops happening. An instrument in the main living space gets played more. Making that livable for everyone else is mostly logistics: headphones on a digital, so a scale drill costs the room nothing; two or three agreed practice windows, settled in advance rather than renegotiated nightly; and placement that angles the player into the room instead of leaving them facing a wall with their back to the family. Children practice longer when an adult is within earshot, even one who is only cooking. Treat the piano as furniture rather than equipment, too — left open, music standing ready, it gets touched in passing several times a day, which adds up faster than any schedule. Arlington ISD lays the groundwork underneath: certified music specialists teach general music from kindergarten through sixth grade, string instruction starts in fifth grade at all 54 traditional elementary campuses, and band and choir begin in seventh. Keyboard study runs alongside that and feeds straight back into it.
Readiness in a child shows up as attention rather than birthday, and for many it arrives between five and seven. Teenagers usually turn up with one specific song and stay for the theory once they see what it unlocks. Adults make up a large share of piano students and often move quickly through the reading. Those who stopped at twelve and start again at forty often find more stayed in the hands than they expected.
