Treat the following as market orientation and not as a SIRIUS quote. Independent teachers around the metro commonly land near $30 to $50 for half an hour and roughly $50 to $85 for a full one, with the higher figures usually attached to long performing or teaching records. Lesson length, a teacher's background and any travel involved all move the number, so confirm it directly with whoever you are considering. Almost always because of where the finger sits, not how hard it presses. A fingertip parked in the middle of the fret space needs far more force than one placed just behind the fret wire, and squeezing harder pulls the note sharp while your hand tires out. Check three things in order: fingers arched enough that the pads are not muting the neighbouring string, thumb behind the neck rather than hooked over the top, and the guitar itself properly set up, since high action makes clean notes nearly impossible for a beginner. A teacher watching on camera usually identifies the culprit finger within a minute.
Internal timing, and it is trainable. Alone you unconsciously bend the tempo around the passages you find hard, and the habit only becomes audible once somebody else refuses to bend with you. The cure is playing to something external daily: a metronome, a drum loop, or the original recording at full speed. Begin by putting the click on beats two and four instead of all four, which forces you to hold the pulse yourself in between. Once you can strum through a whole song without drifting, joining other musicians stops feeling like an exam.
A guitar, a reliable connection and a device with a camera, angled so that your fretting hand is visible from the side and your strumming hand from the front. That is the entire list. No software is installed, the lesson runs in a browser tab, and corrections reach you mid-phrase rather than after the fact. Nobody drives anywhere either, which counts for a lot in a region divided by a state line and by the split between city and county, since an hour then slots in around a shift. Possibly, though rarely for the reason people assume. Cheap instruments are usually built adequately these days; what they leave the factory without is a setup. The most quoted opening line in rock guitar was assembled by a man from this city out of parts belonging to somebody else, the most useful fact a beginner here can carry. Chuck Berry cut "Johnny B. Goode" in 1958, and its introduction is lifted close to note for note from Carl Hogan's opening to Louis Jordan's "Ain't That Just Like a Woman" in 1946. Berry never pretended otherwise: he named Hogan, T-Bone Walker and Charlie Christian as his sources, and shrugged that nothing is new under the sun.
That admission is a syllabus. Nobody invents a guitar style out of nothing; you collect phrases off records, keep the ones your hands take to, and recombine them until the seams stop showing. The early years are vocabulary work: double stops, a bend that arrives on pitch instead of near it, a turnaround you can drop into any twelve-bar. Originality happens later, when you decide the order.
Berry was living at 3137 Whittier Street in the Greater Ville through all of it: he and his wife Themetta moved in during 1950 and stayed eight years, the stretch covering his entire rise. The house joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 and stands empty today.
What catches people out is shopping for a teacher by address. The Cosmopolitan Club, where Berry sat in with Johnnie Johnson's trio on New Year's Eve 1952, was in East St. Louis: a separate city, on the Illinois bank. Blueberry Hill, home of the Duck Room he played until October 2014, prints a St. Louis mailing address but stands in University City, its own municipality. Clayton, Maplewood and Kirkwood are separate again, and the city has stood apart from St. Louis County since 1876. Filtering for guitar lessons in St. Louis by ZIP code means working from bad data.
Open shapes come first, then real time on the joins between them, because the silence where a chord should have landed is what makes playing sound like practicing. Strumming is its own subject: which beats carry weight, which the hand passes over without striking, and why the arm swings either way. Barre shapes wait until the grip can hold the pressure, then hand over the neck. Fingerstyle pulls the hands apart, alternate picking turns effort into steering, and slurs stop a melody sounding punched in one note at a time. Tablature appears in week one, and timing sits under everything.
All three are taught; none is compulsory first. A steel-string acoustic is self-contained, portable and productively unforgiving; nylon strings and a wider classical neck suit fingerstyle and smaller hands. An electric sits lighter under the fingers and puts bending and vibrato in range sooner, but its amplifier is a second instrument whose least flattering setting exposes your picking hand quickest.

Practicing alone has a destination, and this is a good town for it. Off Broadway, at 3509 Lemp Avenue in the Cherokee-Lemp district, is the city's longest-running independent music room and books touring and local bills weekly. Further west, the Pageant and Delmar Hall stand at 6161 and 6133 Delmar Boulevard, on the city's stretch of the Loop rather than University City's. An honest setup changes how a cheap guitar feels more than an upgrade would.
Most children manage from six or seven, once concentration holds and the hand spans the strings; body size counts more than the birthday. Teenagers arrive with a band already imagined. Adults split into those who never touched an instrument and the larger group who bought a guitar, hit a wall, and kept it as a reproach. That second group moves quickest: the ear is trained, only the hands are behind.
