Both are normal in the first weeks. Sore fingertips are your skin adapting, and calluses usually form within two to four weeks of short daily practice, which is one reason fifteen focused minutes a day beats one long stretch at the weekend. Buzzing is almost always a placement issue: fingers landing too far behind the fret, not enough pressure, or a thumb creeping over the top of the neck. Your teacher can see all three on camera and correct them while you play. If the buzz turns up everywhere on the neck rather than on one or two strings, the instrument may simply need a setup rather than better technique.
Yes, and that is usually where the format pays off most. With a short diagnostic rather than a reset. None of that means you should be driving to a lesson. The city stretches a long way past the numbered-and-lettered grid, and a weeknight run in from Natomas, the Pocket or Tahoe Park can swallow the hour you meant to spend playing. That is the plain argument for guitar lessons in Sacramento that happen in your own living room: the hour stays an hour.
The first stretch is open chords and, more to the point, moving between them without a gap. That gap is the difference between playing a song and restarting one. A nylon-string classical is gentlest of the three, and the sensible pick for fingerstyle.
Practice needs somewhere to go. The Fox & Goose Public House at 1001 R Street, a downtown pub and music venue for over fifty years, runs a music open mic every Monday at 7pm, with sign-ups from 6:30 drawn lottery style. Three chords and a song you mean is a full outing there, and nobody minds a barre chord still under construction. That is a realistic first-year target for most people taking guitar lessons in Sacramento.
When the guitar itself is the obstacle, buzzing frets, action fighting your hand, a jack that cuts out mid-song, Skip's Music at 4614 Madison Avenue has sold and serviced instruments here since 1973 and keeps luthiers on site for setups, refrets and electronics.
