Guitar lessons in Detroit with SIRIUS

A guitar teacher in Detroit is easy to want and tedious to find, so SIRIUS handles that part for you. Send us your playing level, the evenings you can realistically keep free and a couple of songs you are aiming at, and we match you to a screened instructor on exactly that basis. It works the same way for someone who has never fretted a note as for a player rebuilding after a decade away. Book the free trial and a session proposal comes back naming the teacher we think suits you.

Our teachers take on kids and adults, absolute beginners and people who already gig, on nylon, steel and solid-body alike. The software was built for playing rather than meetings, so the audio survives a distorted chord and nothing needs installing first. It all runs in a browser tab, from a bedroom in Detroit or a basement with the amp already set up. Between lessons, assignments and session recordings stay filed in the Workspace instead of scattering across your phone.

Frequently asked questions about guitar lessons in Detroit

How much do guitar lessons in Detroit cost?

For orientation only, and not a SIRIUS rate: independent teachers around metro Detroit commonly sit near $30 to $45 for a half hour, with hourly rates clustering between $50 and $85 and busy session players asking more. Lesson length, a teacher's track record and any travel involved all move that figure, so check it with whoever you actually hire. What SIRIUS fixes is the other side of it: your rate is on screen before you book, the trial lesson is free, and no term commits you.

My fingertips hurt after ten minutes. Is that normal?

Completely normal, and temporary. Steel strings press into skin that has never been asked to do this, so for the first two or three weeks short sessions beat heroic ones: ten minutes, twice a day, until the calluses arrive. What is not normal is pain in the wrist, thumb or forearm, which usually means the neck angle, the strap height or the amount of squeeze needs adjusting. Say so during the lesson and your teacher will correct your hand position on the spot. An instrument with the string height set properly also hurts far less than one that has never been adjusted, which is worth an hour at a repair bench.

What do I need at home before the first lesson?

An instrument of your own, because the practice between sessions is where progress actually happens, and SIRIUS does not rent out or supply guitars. Beyond that the list is short: a tuner or a tuner app, a few spare picks, and a way to prop your phone or laptop so the camera sees both hands at once, the one on the neck and the one over the strings. On electric, a small practice amp and a cable are plenty, and nothing else in the pedal aisle matters yet. A cheap guitar that has been set up properly will outplay a pricier one nobody has ever adjusted, so put your first spare money there.

Does an online guitar lesson in Detroit really replace sitting in a room with a teacher?

For this instrument it comes remarkably close, because almost everything a teacher needs to watch is your two hands, and a camera aimed at the fretboard shows them better than a chair three feet away. You get the same one-to-one hour, the same plan, and audio tuned for instruments rather than conference calls. The gains are practical and local: no crossing town in traffic, no building the evening around a studio timetable, and a choice of teacher that is not limited to whoever keeps a room near your part of Detroit. The free trial exists so you can test all of that before anything is committed.

How much should I practice between lessons?

Little and often wins by a distance. Fifteen or twenty attentive minutes on most days will move you further in a month than one long Sunday marathon, because chord changes and picking patterns are motor skills that consolidate through repetition and sleep rather than endurance. Split the time up: a few minutes on whatever is currently hard, a few on something you already play well enough to enjoy, and two with a metronome. Your teacher sets the week's targets and the Workspace keeps them written down, so you never sit down wondering what to work on.

Online guitar lessons in Detroit: learn guitar from home

Detroit is famous for voices, but the records underneath them were built out of guitar parts. In the house at 2648 West Grand Boulevard, the Funk Brothers regularly stacked three guitarists at once — Robert White, Eddie Willis and Joe Messina — each given a different job so the rhythm never sat still in one register. Dennis Coffey, born in the city in 1940, carried fuzz and a wah pedal into that same basement and left them all over the Temptations' "Cloud Nine" and "Ball of Confusion." Anyone learning here is joining a craft this city has practiced for sixty years.

Where the volume came from

The other half is turned all the way up. At 8952 Grand River Avenue, the Grande Ballroom hosted the two October 1968 nights that became the MC5's Kick Out the Jams; the building has stood derelict for decades, so it is a landmark, not a place to play. The noise stayed anyway. Jack White, born and raised here, keeps Third Man Records at 441 West Canfield Street in the Cass Corridor, where a mastering room and a vinyl pressing plant run behind the shop counter.

Why the city line makes the case for learning at home

Detroit spreads across roughly 139 square miles, and the map around it is stitched from separate municipalities that read like neighborhoods on a phone. Hamtramck and Highland Park are independent cities fully enclosed by Detroit; Ferndale and Dearborn are their own towns along the border, Royal Oak sits further north again, and Pontiac is about thirty miles out. That geography decides where the gear lives: most of the region's guitar retail and repair sits outside the city limits, with Detroit Guitar on Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak and Dajos Guitar Repair out in Livonia. Guitar lessons in Detroit that happen at your own kitchen table remove the freeway math before it starts.

Six strings, in the order they make sense

Open chords come first, then the thing that really decides whether you sound like a player: moving between them without a hole opening up in the bar. Strumming follows: where the accent falls, and how the wrist keeps traveling on the beats you leave silent. Barre chords show up once your grip can take them and hand you the rest of the fretboard. Fingerpicking gives the right hand a second voice, alternate picking turns raw speed into something you can steer, and pull-offs keep a phrase moving. Tab is the currency of guitar music, so you will learn to read it, along with enough notation to follow a horn player's chart. Timing runs under all of it, drilled against a click until the pulse survives without one.

Plugged in, or not

We teach both, and there is no universally correct place to begin. The acoustic demands more from your fingertips and gives you something you can carry onto a porch without a power outlet. An electric carries thinner strings on a narrower neck, easier on beginner hands, and sits naturally under blues, rock and the fuzz-and-wah vocabulary Coffey brought to those Motown sessions. Plug in and the amp joins the syllabus: what gain does to your signal, and how overdrive and reverb serve a part instead of hiding it.

What SIRIUS puts on the table

  • Everything lands in one place: your Workspace holds the chord sheets, the exercises and video of you playing them, so Sunday practice resumes where Wednesday's lesson stopped.
  • The number is visible first: your rate appears before anything is booked, the first session is free, and nothing binds you to a minimum term.
  • Your teacher is chosen, not assigned by postcode: the match draws on a roster of over 150 screened guitar teachers, so Corktown and Livernois students each get the specialist they need.
  • Nothing to install: class runs in an ordinary browser window, laptop on the table or phone propped against the amp.

Stages worth aiming at

Practice should end with you leaving the house, case in hand. Saint Andrew's Hall at 431 East Congress Street has put touring and local bands on the same stage for years. El Club at 4114 West Vernor Highway is an all-ages room in Southwest Detroit, which matters if your player is fifteen. And Baker's Keyboard Lounge at 20510 Livernois Avenue, a jazz room dating to the 1930s, is where Coffey's album Live at Baker's was captured.

The people who sign up

Eight-year-olds whose fingers barely span three frets. Teenagers who show up with a setlist in mind and absorb technique through it. Adults who quit at barre chords twenty years ago and kept the guitar anyway. Gigging players after slide technique, theory, or an escape from the two keys they always fall into. No starting point is too modest, and no birthday rules you out.

Start with one hour

The only question worth settling is whether an hour of your week is worth it. Say which songs you want under your fingers, and a matching teacher plus a free first session comes back to you. Bring whatever instrument is already leaning in the corner — the aim is that next time you pass the Grande Ballroom's brick shell on Grand River Avenue, you can play something that started inside it.
