Tell us what you want to play and we match you with one of more than 150 guitar teachers, taking your own criteria into account. The first lesson is a free trial lesson with no obligation, and you decide after it whether to carry on.
After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
The first clean chord changes under a steady strum tend to come with a few weeks of regular playing. How far you go from there depends on how often you pick the guitar up between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private guitar lesson works with the guitar you already have, acoustic, electric or classical, one-on-one and without waiting for a group to catch up. In a one-on-one lesson all 45 minutes go to one player's hands and one player's questions.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. The early lessons are about posture, first chords and a steady strumming hand, and reading tabs and notes comes along the way. Some of our teachers specialize in guitar for beginners, others teach advanced and professional players, and every lesson is built around the songs and styles you want to play.

Ann Arbor has in-person guitar teaching at several levels, from a classical sequence in the high schools to a music store whose teachers list guitar. Online, a student picks a teacher whose background fits rock, folk or jazz as well as classical guitar, and the lesson sits at a fixed time at home with no trip to a store.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no guitar case to carry, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher watches both of your hands on camera and stops you where a chord change buzzes or a rhythm drifts. If a teacher turns out not to fit, you switch in the booking tool.
SIRIUS has over 150 guitar teachers, part of more than 400 music teachers across vocals, piano and guitar. Every one of them is vetted and handpicked before a single lesson, carries a SIRIUS certification, and stays in regular training and quality control. We teach every level and every age, from a first lesson to stage-ready.
You are matched rather than assigned: tell us your style, whether classical, rock, jazz or fingerstyle, along with your goals and your schedule, and we find the teacher who fits them. Lessons run live over video on software we developed ourselves for music lessons, so the sound carries the detail a guitar lesson depends on. In the SIRIUS Workspace your guitar sheet music is there for you outside of lessons too.

More hours = a better price per hour. Every plan: 45-min one-on-one lessons with vetted teachers.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. Locally, the teachers we checked post $33 to $40 for a half-hour lesson and $66 to $80 for an hour.
Either one works, and the guitar you actually want to play is usually the better choice, because that is the one you will pick up. An electric tends to have lighter strings, which is easier on the fingers at first; a steel-string acoustic needs no extra equipment. If you are unsure, a common piece of advice is to start on an acoustic. Our lessons cover acoustic, electric and classical guitar, so the one you already own is a fine place to begin.
Many children are ready for guitar at around six or seven, and some not until ten or eleven, which is normal. Readiness counts for more than the birthday: real interest in playing, the ability to sit and focus for a stretch, and hands that reach around a guitar neck sized for a child. The free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.
That depends on what you want to play and on how much you practice between lessons, so the number of lessons differs from one student to the next. The early work is posture, first chords and keeping the strumming hand steady, and you can start on your favorite songs right away and build from there. Your teacher sets the pace with you after the trial lesson.
Yes, and for guitar the camera covers what matters. A guitar lesson is mostly listening, demonstrating and repeating, and none of that needs the same room. Your teacher sees your fretting hand and your picking hand on camera, can stop you on a buzzing note or an uneven strum, and the sheet music you work from stays open in your Workspace between lessons. In Ann Arbor, in-person guitar lessons are on offer from teachers at a music store in the city and from a private studio on its west side, so a student can compare a lesson there with one online.

The city's public school district lists three guitar courses for its high schools. Guitar I asks for no experience and runs at three high schools, where students play classical, nylon-string guitar and learn to read both notation and tablature. Guitar II follows at the same three schools and Guitar III at two of them, while the jazz band takes guitar players by audition and the jazz combos welcome guitar too.
A music store in the city sells new and used guitars, has its own repair bench and holds lessons in the building, with eight teachers on its own list who name guitar, two of them for classical guitar. Just outside the city line, the community college that serves the county lists a beginning and an intermediate guitar course of two credits each. The university teaches guitar in group classes, from first chords to advanced, to its own enrolled students.
