Three published figures sit beside one another in Pierre, and one of them ignores the calendar. The Pierre Players ask $20 in advance and $25 on the day of performance for the same seat. River Cities Public Transit triples its flat pickup rate, from $2.00 to $6.00, when an order arrives after 9 p.m. Pierre Music LLC prints $25 for a weekly 30-minute private one-on-one session and $37.50 for a two-person one. With SIRIUS a charged hour starts at $29, the trial before that costs nothing, and the hour hands you its terms at the outset. No date moves what we ask.
Pierre Music LLC describes how its private lessons are placed in the week: they are "scheduled by the teachers in coordination with the student's schedule." Read as a sentence about singing, that says something useful, because the starting point becomes the person who turned up. Your SIRIUS coach measures the first piece against what that person can do with it, so the question narrows to a single song. When you can sing gets answered off your own calendar.
Pierre prints two ages, and they do unrelated jobs. The Pierre Concert Series admits anyone age 21 and younger at no charge, limited to 4 per request. The South Dakota Discovery Center asks $8.00 general admission and $6.00 from seniors aged 65 and over, along with active military, veterans and AAA members. You hear your own opening hour back and take the measure of it, and neither rule has any bearing on what turns up. A discount beginning at 65 says something about a ticket window.
Two of the published prices in this town count backwards from a fixed point: the ticket exchangeable only before its printed date, and the van that costs less when it is booked the night ahead. Singing offers no fixed point to count back from, so the reckoning has to run forward. SIRIUS resets the terms as the work shifts, and tuning moves within weeks because an ear corrects faster than anything muscular, while the rest arrives on its own schedule. The cutoff is the one thing this calculation does without.
A ride in Pierre costs less if it is asked for by 9 p.m. on the day before it happens, and River Cities Public Transit takes those orders between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Lessons over a connection have no such window, since nothing has to be dispatched and no route built around them. That breath and that attack SIRIUS hands back to you inside the same hour, corrected while you can still feel them. Nine in the evening governs a van here, and governs nothing about a Tuesday lesson.

The Pierre Players sell the same chair at two prices. An adult ticket bought in advance is $20; the identical ticket bought on the day of performance is $25, and it can be exchanged only before the date printed on it. River Cities Public Transit runs the same arrangement on another scale: a ride ordered by 9 p.m. the evening before carries a $2.00 flat pickup rate and $0.25 a mile up to ten miles, while the same ride ordered later carries $6.00 flat and $0.50 a mile. Neither figure describes a chair or a distance. Both describe the day somebody made up their mind.
Five dollars separates an advance seat in the Grand Opera House at 109 S. Pierre Street from a day-of seat, and the five dollars is the price of having waited. Pierre Music LLC works the other way around: its figure for a weekly private session holds on any day, and the thing actually negotiated is when the session happens. Your SIRIUS coach holds the hour on those terms too, keeping the slot yours to fix after the first meeting. Here a price answers to the day you decided; the teaching answers to your calendar.
At 124 S Euclid Ave, Pierre Music LLC divides its private lesson program into school year sessions from September 1 to May 31 and summer sessions from June 1 to August 31. Two calendars sit there, and a lesson is fitted to the second of them by arrangement with whoever is taking it. You tell a SIRIUS coach the same thing about the terms, naming the evenings you can genuinely keep, and the plan gets built outward from that answer. The calendar the teaching follows is one you already live by.
Tuning leads, being the most testable thing a voice does: two notes that ought to match either do or sit slightly under, and an ear picks that up well before any muscle changes; breath stands beside it, supplying the note long enough to be judged at all. Stamina and text make the second pair. SIRIUS sets each exercise against the support underneath your own note. Of the two pairs, the second takes the longer time.
A published figure is the last link of a chain, and the chain runs backwards from it. Behind the figure stand the number of lessons and their length; behind those, a plan written down before anything is charged; behind the plan, somebody who has already listened to you. At the far end of that chain SIRIUS hears the recording of your first hour before any figure is written down, and that hour is free. The chain ends at a coach.
For "Walking Home" at the Grand Opera House on Saturday, October 3, 2026, doors are at 6:30 p.m. and curtain at 7 p.m. The half hour between the two is the whole of the margin; once the curtain is up the room has moved on. The SIRIUS hour turns a phrase over as often as the phrase needs turning, because the audio is kept and can be played again on an evening when the feel of it has gone. A door closes on the half hour; a recorded phrase has no such edge.
The Capital City Band plays Wednesdays at 8 p.m. through June and July at the Steamboat Park Amphitheater, free to attend, and a musician who wants to join brings an instrument to a short rehearsal at 6:30 p.m. on the evening of a concert; the last 2026 date was July 29. Lutheran Memorial Church at 320 E Prospect Ave lists its practice schedule in full: Church Choir and Bell Choir both Sundays at 5:30pm, Youth Choir Wednesdays at 7:15pm, Worship Team Tuesdays at 6:00pm. The Pierre Players have worked the Grand Opera House, built in 1906, since 1978. The Pierre Concert Series brought the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra under Delta David Gier to the T.F. Riggs High School Theater, a hall of the Pierre School District, on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. Oahe Days is announced for June 18 and 19, 2027 at Steamboat Park. At Pierre Music LLC, Carrie Baldwin teaches voice and piano.
The Pierre Concert Series sold its symphony afternoon at $35 for an adult and nothing at all for anyone age 21 and younger, limited to 4 per request. Two numbers carry that sentence: one marks where youth is held to stop, the other caps how much of it may arrive on a single booking. Your SIRIUS coach calls out the jaw, the soft palate and the support exactly as they stand that day, and no count of any kind enters into it. The four in that rule belongs to a booking system.
River Cities Public Transit takes orders from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the hour an order lands at decides what it costs. You measure your own progress against a recording made a month earlier, and the teaching gets set against the evenings that actually hold. Nine in the evening is a deadline for a van.
"Walking Home" on October 3 asks no ticket price, and donations are welcome to benefit the Missouri Shores Domestic Violence Center. Asking no price still means an evening given over. SIRIUS listens to the song you already know before anything at all is settled, and asks for nothing else beforehand. It takes an evening, and an evening is all it takes.
An advance ticket at $20 turns into a $25 ticket the moment the buyer waits for the day of the show. Once the first hour has been sung, SIRIUS resets the plan to the length that hour turned out to need, so no part of the price is waiting on a date. At the box office and at the dispatcher, the cutoff sets the figure. A voice has no cutoff.
