Indian Hills Community College, whose main campus stands inside the city line at 525 Grandview Avenue, runs four ensembles: the Jazz Band by audition, the Concert Choir without one, a Chamber Choir by audition, and student-led Men's and Women's Choirs. Between them the town covers a wide spread of ability. One singer and one coach set the pace between them, whatever the voice needs.
Southern Iowa Public Transportation, which also runs under the name 10-15 Transit, runs Ottumwa Rides and Ottumwa Paratransit from 6:45 a.m. to 5:50 p.m., and its fares are written by boundary: $2 inside the city limits, $4 in the county, $25 county to county. Those are operating windows and not departures. The library closes at 7 p.m. four nights and at 5 p.m. on two. The coach hearing it falls in behind the evening you set apart rather than ahead of it.

One group falls outside it: the Ottumwa Area Community Chorus publishes neither a starting time nor a closing one, and gives a length instead, 90 to 120 minutes for adults and 60 to 90 for children, with the rhythm set by the next performance rather than by a weekday. A length is a promise about how long you will work. The lesson on the clock doubles up, carrying a start and a finish together.
