Singing is technique before it is talent, and technique answers to work. The first audible changes - steadier breath, a cleaner start to a phrase, a note that stops sliding - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you practice between lessons, which is what the exercises in your SIRIUS Workspace are for.
No one is too late to begin singing: a private voice lesson lets you work on the range you already have, one-on-one, without singing in front of a group. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one voice rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Every voice can be trained, and the first lessons are about breath, support and intonation rather than repertoire. Yes. Singing is a trainable skill: breath, support and intonation all answer to practice, and you need no prior experience to start. True amusia, an actual inability to hear pitch, affects only about one person in seventy, and almost nobody who believes they cannot sing turns out to be one of them. A private lesson and a group class do different jobs. One-on-one, every correction is about your voice - where the breath gives out, where the register changes - and all 45 minutes are yours. George Fox University in Newberg has eight music ensembles, and three of them are choirs: the Concert Choir, the Chamber Singers and the Master Chorus. The ensembles are open to students of any major, and auditions for the Concert Choir take place on the first weekend of the fall semester. The university's Bauman Auditorium seats 1,119 people and hosts its band, choir and orchestra concerts.
The Chehalem Cultural Center has the 214-seat LaJoie Theatre and a Black Box Theatre, and its calendar lists upcoming concerts. For children, the Chehalem Park & Recreation District runs an after-school choir at three elementary schools from January to March. At the Chehalem Senior Center, the Elderberry Jam Choir sings on Fridays and welcomes drop-ins. In the Newberg-Dundee school district, Mountain View Middle School holds a band play-a-thon on October 30, 2026.
