Prices in Key West depend on whether you are listening or singing. Impromptu asks $20 at the door and the South Florida Symphony starts at $35; the high school band works out at around $300 over a year. Twenty dollars buys a seat, and a seat is a fair thing to buy. SIRIUS waives the opening hour, and from there singing lessons are priced at $29 and up.
Keys Choral Arts asks for no audition, takes anybody over 16, and then names a Tuesday in September after which it stops taking anybody. An open intake still has a closing date, while a Tuesday rehearsal that never prints its hour never quite opens either. The sentence about not being able to sing usually survives because no one has ever tested it properly. One hour, one listener, one song you already know, and the sentence gets its first test.
Sixteen is a real number and Keys Choral Arts prints it. It is a rule about signatures and blend, while the voice behind it keeps its own calendar. Nothing about a voice changes on the day that number is reached, and it does not wait on the number either. What a coach needs is the voice as it stands this month, which is available at any age anybody has ever brought to a lesson.
How long it takes is a question the houses in town answer with a season ticket. The Waterfront Playhouse opens in October and closes in April, and calls that a season. A voice keeps no season. The only date in it is the one you put in the diary next, and the distance between two of those is the whole of the measurement.
Two of the ten northbound trips on the Lower Keys Shuttle stop at the College of the Florida Keys: 2:43 p.m. and 4:25 p.m. A mile marker is an address for a place with no corners in it, and a schedule built on mile markers is built around distance. Online teaching needs no address at all. You sing where you are, you are answered while the phrase is still fresh, and what the hour produced is kept for whatever practice you do by yourself.

The Lower Keys Shuttle schedule is worth reading from the bottom of the island up. The first three stops are street corners: Whitehead and Eaton at mile marker 0, Truman and Simonton at 1, North Roosevelt and Searstown at 3. Then a depot at 4, a college at 5, a corner on Stock Island at 5, and after that the island names take over. Boca Chica at 8, Big Coppitt at 10, Bay Point at 15, Sugarloaf Key at 16, Cudjoe Key at 22.5, Summerland Key at 25, Big Pine Key at 30, Bahia Honda at 37. At Marathon the street names come back: Sombrero Road at 50, 92nd Street at 52, Sadowski at 53.5. A corner needs a town around it. Between the two towns, the address is the distance.
Singing here keeps to the corners. Keys Choral Arts rehearses at Grace Lutheran Church on Flagler Avenue, a street with a name. The Chancel Choir meets at St. Paul's on Duval Street. The choir loft at the Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea on Windsor Lane runs two rehearsals on a Thursday evening, at 5:30 p.m. in English and 6:30 p.m. in Spanish. The high school band works on Flagler Avenue from 2:50 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. It sits inside a few square miles, and each piece of it runs in a room and under a schedule the parish or the school district set.
St. Paul's runs its Chancel Choir on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and it sings Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning at St. Paul's, Thursday evening in the choir loft, Tuesday at Grace Lutheran with no clock attached at all: three rehearsals, and one director's ear across all of them. Timothy Peterson directs the parish music and the town choir both, which is a lot of singers for one pair of ears. Put the same hour in front of one voice and the corrections get specific in a way no section allows.
A phrase leaves the body before it leaves the room. Volume is the easiest thing to add; it is also the least useful, and most people who want to be louder actually want to be clearer. The arc of a phrase is the first thing anybody hears and the last thing most people work on. The crossing between registers gets its own tempo; stamina turns up unasked once neither of those costs effort.
The Studios of Key West keeps nine studios and two classrooms behind a 200-seat auditorium on Eaton Street, and members pay less for what happens inside them. A coach is the part of a lesson that cannot be printed in a schedule. You name the music, and only then is a coach put to it, the reverse of walking into a room and taking the director it came with. Your first hour goes uninvoiced; the ones after it start at $29.
Grace Lutheran Church on Flagler Avenue is a good room for a choir, and Keys Choral Arts uses it on Tuesdays. The choir loft at the Basilica holds one rehearsal at 5:30 p.m. and another at 6:30 p.m., and both of them exist once. In a rehearsal a phrase might come round four or five times; in a recording it comes round as often as you press the key. With SIRIUS the teaching arrives by video, into a workspace of your own, and a phrase sung on Tuesday can be played back on Friday.
Impromptu Classical Concerts has been running since 1972 and plays six Sundays at 4:00 p.m., admission $20 at the door, with students let in without paying and a subscription from $100. In 2026 the series sits at the Tennessee Williams Theatre on College Road while St. Paul's is closed for renovation. The South Florida Symphony Orchestra takes the same stage for its 28th Key West season, on Saturday, January 24, 2026 and Saturday, March 14, 2026, both at 7:30 p.m., tickets from $35. On Saturday, March 7, 2026 the Conch Shell Blowing Contest holds its 63rd edition in the garden of the Oldest House Museum on Duval Street, gates at 10:30 a.m. and blowing from 12:00 noon.
The Conch Shell Blowing Contest enters men, women, children and groups in the same yard on the same Saturday, and judges all of them on quality, duration, loudness and novelty. Most singing in town is sorted more carefully than that. Keys Choral Arts prints 16 as a floor; the high school band takes the grades a school hands it. Sixteen is sensible where voices are being blended. Nothing is being blended when one voice has the hour to itself.
The city buses stopped keeping a printed schedule in 2025. Key West Rides runs on demand from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., daily except for three holidays, booked in 15-minute increments. It is a sensible answer to a small island, and it means the hour of leaving is yours. Nothing on the street has a say in when a lesson starts.
Registration for the conch shell contest closes at 11:45 a.m. and the contest starts at 12:00 noon. Fifteen minutes is all the warning anybody gets, and people still sign up. The first lesson asks less than that. The listening comes first and the deciding second, and nothing closes at 11:45.
The schedule names corners at both ends of the road and islands in between. A corner, an island, and a number painted on a post: a road can be described that way because a road is a distance. Music is not a road. Your own hour has no mile marker, because it has no distance to measure.
