The Ithaca Community Chorus & Chamber Singers asks its singers to buy their own scores; the SummerSing Chorus lends them out and takes them back at the end. Ours hands over the hour and what came out of it: a first lesson carrying no charge, and paid singing lessons starting at $29. The hour belongs to one coach, and the notes and the recording belong to you. So the opening figure softens a decision that usually needs a phone call.
Then you sing as you are, and the coach works with what arrives. Opus Ithaca School of Music states that each teacher manages their own calendar; what lies past that is unwritten. A lesson with us is not a rehearsal you have to keep pace with. No part goes uncovered if you stop mid-phrase. An hour that frays in the middle still shows the coach where the work sits.
A grade line sorts singers one way and an age sorts them another. The Ithaca Children & Youth Chorus is built on grades; Opus Ithaca School of Music sorts by subject. We use neither line. A six-year-old and a seventy-year-old reach the same booking page, and the coach sets the hour to whichever voice turns up: one still growing, one in change, one picking it up again after a long silence. A printed roster empties and refills on a date of its own; yours is the week you pick.
Here is a local measure. Transpose: Ithaca Queer Singers Alliance charges a registration fee of $25 and holds open enrollment through the year, and its page prints neither a rehearsal hour nor a word about who carries the music home. Your own first weeks carry a window you set, and the work still evens out: a handful of steady weeks changes how a line sits, and a stretch of months moves the range.
It does, and for singing more than for most subjects. Audio here is built around a sung note instead of a spoken one, the hour is recorded, and the drills sit in your workspace afterward. No drive across town, no weather to lose. SIRIUS swells the part of a lesson a room cannot give you: the replay.

At 402 N. Aurora Street two choruses share a dining room, a weekday and an evening, and part company over the sheet music. The Ithaca Community Chorus & Chamber Singers runs from September 9, 2026 to a concert on January 16, 2027, and holds that singers are responsible for purchasing their own scores. The SummerSing Chorus runs eight weeks from June 10, and there the Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca provide music at no charge for your use, to be returned at the end of the program. Season length decides who owns the notes.
Two schools here price by the length of the lesson. The Community School of Music and Arts posts $35 for 30 minutes, $48 for 45 minutes and $60 for the hour; Opus Ithaca School of Music posts $41, $57 and $76 for those same three lengths. The coach watching the screen couples an hour to the take you can play again, and that take outlasts the hour that made it. Where does a length stop being a price and flare into something you own?
The singer in the room charts the song you came with, and the SIRIUS coach assigned to you works that one line. The choral calendar here is a grid of fixed slots: Cornell University Chorus meets Wednesdays from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., the Cornell University Glee Club Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the Cornell University Chorale Tuesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., each during the fall and spring semesters. Cornell University books its choral hours as one credit each, and the Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca book theirs by the week, so the sheet music wanders home with the singer or back to the dining room by the length of the run.
Four things carry a singer through a season: breath cut to the length of a line, a move from low to high that goes unheard, pitch that holds in a quiet room, and reading enough to keep your seat in a score. The Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca ask little of it at the door, since their four choruses are non-auditioned. Cornell University draws the opposite rule from the same material, setting its Fall 2026 hearing week from August 17th to August 25th in Lincoln Hall 233. The lesson already booked rates against the weekday you kept open. When does a craft ration itself to the singers who already hold it?
What a singer keeps here and what goes back at the end depends on the length of the run. Beyond that a lesson cedes little to the take you can play again: a coach chosen by what you sing, notes put on paper, a recording after the hour, a first lesson carrying no charge, and paid lessons starting at $29. The hour dwindles to its last minute; the record of it stays where you put it.
One house number carries two names: Opus Ithaca School of Music gives 402 North Aurora Street with no building on it, and the Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca give that number as St. Paul's United Methodist Church. An address is a thin way to learn what happens in a room. A lesson over video settles that in one place: audio tuned for a sung note rather than a spoken one, an hour that is recorded, drills that land in your workspace. SIRIUS fills in that record before you stand up.
The State Theatre of Ithaca, Inc. stands at 107 West State Street in a 1915 building that began as an auto garage and dealership and first opened as a theater on December 6, 1928; it seats just over 1,600. The Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca run four choruses without a hearing: the Ithaca Community Chorus & Chamber Singers, founded in 1976; Transpose: Ithaca Queer Singers Alliance; the SummerSing Chorus; and VOICES Multicultural Chorus. VOICES Multicultural Chorus meets Mondays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., September through December, in the Annex of the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca, 208 E. Buffalo Street.
The column head on the Ithaca Children & Youth Chorus page is a grade where you might expect an age: Prelude takes K-2, Intermezzo grades 3 to 5, and the Ithaca Children & Youth Chorus Chorale grades 6 to 12, each listed under Fall 2026 Ensembles with no closing date printed. Opus Ithaca School of Music sorts by subject and puts Voice on a list of nineteen. Ithaca High School, 1401 North Cayuga Street, keeps a Director of Choral/Vocal Music on staff. The lesson already booked straddles the song you came with whatever line a local roster would put you on. The result halves the distance between a beginner and a returning singer.
Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) at 737 Willow Ave. and no department of the city, though the City of Ithaca helped found it. Its route sheets carry a dated window at the head - fall runs August 16 through December 19, 2026 - and the summer book prints separately. An hour on your own screen carries no dated window at its head. Registration resumes the lesson already booked around the phrase that thins near its close, at an hour you set yourself.
The Ithaca Community Chorus & Chamber Singers opens on-site registration at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9th, then on September 16th and 23rd. The published list stops after September 23rd, and the group names late January or early February for the next term without printing a date. The singer in the room yields to what the next lesson takes up. Here the first hour wants a name and a time. You sing something familiar while one person listens and names what it is doing. The Community School of Music and Arts warns that matching a student to an instructor can take a few weeks, and SIRIUS loops back accordingly.
A line here separates who may answer a question, and the body that publishes it draws that line. Opus Ithaca School of Music states that it does not follow the ICSD calendar and that each teacher manages their own schedule, so the district year stops at that door. SIRIUS transcribes what the next lesson takes up onto a page you keep. The unfollowed calendar creeps up on a singer who waits for a door to open, and a voice can begin at home on a Tuesday instead.
