A monthly tuition is a standing arrangement: you agree to a weekly slot, and the figure repeats until you stop it. At 154 East Pike Street that comes to $92.00 a month for a weekly half hour and $184.00 for a weekly hour, plus $15.00 to register. SIRIUS charges per lesson instead, and tuition starts at $29. You pay for the lessons you take. No charge attaches to the trial. Where a price begins matters more here than how high it goes.
The parish at 150 South Maple Ave has put out word that it needs cantors. A cantor sings alone in front of a congregation, which is precisely the position people picture when they doubt they have a voice. That phrase carries a great deal of freight. It rarely reports an inability to produce a pitch. More often it reports that nobody qualified has ever said what the voice does. One coached hour is the shortest route to that information. You may still decide cantoring is not for you. You will at least be deciding it about your own voice.
The conservatory at Notre Dame High School is a program of a school. The notices elsewhere run broader: a parish choir asking for adults, a shop on East Pike Street teaching any age across the counter. SIRIUS starts children at about six, once a child can hold a tune and stay with it. Teenagers are taken through the change while it is happening. Adults arrive at every point after that. Your age decides how much of the hour is spent singing and what the songs are, and it decides nothing about whether you get one.
The Italian Heritage Festival prints Kathy Mattea at 2:55 p.m. on the Sunday. Nothing about learning to sing is available at that resolution. The answer turns on which thing you mean, on what you arrived carrying, and on whether the week between lessons had singing in it. Parts of it move in weeks. Other parts take a season and give no warning when they land. A festival can print a start time to the minute because it knows what it is starting; a voice extends no such courtesy, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing.
CENTRA charges $0.50, takes exact fare only, issues no transfers, and its drivers do not make change. Four conditions, all of them about reaching a place. Lessons over video reach nowhere, so three of those four conditions stop applying. The fourth becomes a connection that holds for the hour. Nobody has to find the exact change.

The Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center stands at 444 West Pike Street, the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library at 404 West Pike Street, and the shop that sells voice lessons at 154 East Pike Street. City Hall is at 222 West Main Street, and the office of the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival at 340 West Main Street. One of those streets unlocks at a posted hour. The other sets dates for other people. Singing one-on-one needs a third kind of address.
Every seat at the Winterfest pageant costs $15.00, and the date printed on the ticket is Saturday, September 26. The festival office at 340 West Main Street deals in a different kind of date: September 4 to 6, fixed well in advance and printed for the whole downtown. A room that admits you on a posted day is one kind of provision; a date that everybody else has to work around is another. A parish at 150 South Maple Ave publishes a weekly rehearsal time, and its address stands on neither street.
At 150 South Maple Ave the hand bells rehearse at 6:00 p.m. on a Thursday and the choir at 7:00 p.m., both under Robin Bohn. In the first you are one pair of hands in a row of them; in the second you are one voice inside a section. Both hours go into producing a single sound together. Working out why your third phrase keeps going flat is a different activity and needs a different room, and it can sit alongside Thursday at 7:00 p.m. without disturbing it.
At 154 East Pike Street a weekly half hour costs $92.00 a month; a weekly hour costs $184.00. The time doubles and the figure doubles with it. The work does not divide so obligingly. Breath support, tuning that holds in a cold room, a gear change between registers that nobody out front notices, and the staying power for a song that started too high are not four equal portions to be halved. Your coach decides where the next stretch goes.
Clarksburg already has weekly voice lessons, taught in a shop at 154 East Pike Street that runs Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closes at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The arrangement is a real one. Those opening hours cannot travel with you, though. You keep the same coach when work takes you out of the state for two weeks, and you move a Tuesday to a Thursday without anyone unlocking a room.
Usually the room decides what is left of an evening. The Antero Performance Hall has a main level, a balcony and a renovated orchestra pit, and it hands back the sound of having been in it, once, while it happened. Lessons are built from the far end of that. SIRIUS records each hour while it runs, so the passage you got right once can be heard again three days later with the guesswork taken out of it. At the Robinson Grand the evening ends with the lights.
The West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival takes the downtown from September 4 to 6. Its stages run 11:15 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on the Friday and the Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Sunday; the band Amici plays at 9:30 p.m. on both those evenings. Winterfest follows on December 4 and 5 across Jackson Square, the public library and the Waldomore, and the pageant that announces it plays at the Robinson Grand on September 26. Notre Dame High School at 127 East Pike St. runs a Performing Arts Conservatory under Cecilia Landers.
The Performing Arts Conservatory at 127 East Pike St. is a program of Notre Dame High School, so it arrives with a school attached to it. If you are an adult who can hold a line, the choir at 150 South Maple Ave rehearses on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. If you are nine, or seventy, or between the schools and the choirs with nothing to join, the printed notices have less for you. SIRIUS puts the date, the address and the song in your hands and works outward from there.
The library at 404 West Pike Street is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and its meeting room still has to be reserved. The Waldomore directly behind it runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and admits people by appointment. The building posts both sets of hours, and the building decides them. What a rehearsal needs unlocked, a lesson does without: it goes into your week first, and your coach works around it. Open and available turn out to be two different words.
A ticket to the pageant at the Robinson Grand costs $15.00 and gets you a seat. The first hour of singing produces something a seat cannot: a description of your own instrument. It tells you where the voice is dependable, where it thins, and which of those is a matter of technique and which of habit. No seat, at any price, holds that.
Pike Street opens at a posted hour. Main Street fixes dates for other people. Both kinds of address ask you to be somewhere at a time somebody else chose. Your coach begins at the hour you chose, at the address you are already at, with the song you brought along. The third address in Clarksburg is the one you are sitting at.
