After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. A music store in Modesto publishes its rates: weekly 30-minute private lessons, piano among the instruments, start at $249 a month on a three-month plan. A group piano studio in the city lists $35 per class for one student, with about sixteen classes a semester.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.

Modesto Junior College runs six piano sections in fall 2026: group piano at three levels, plus one more class whose students get loaner keyboards for home practice. The Stanislaus County branch of the state music teachers' association, based in Modesto, has met since 1935; it holds student recitals and a Baroque Festival and takes part in the state's Certificate of Merit exams.
On November 13 and 14, 2026, the Modesto Symphony Orchestra opens its 96th season at the Gallo Center with Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. The center, opened in 2007, has a 1,248-seat theater and a 440-seat hall it describes as suited to music and dance recitals. The symphony's youth orchestra, founded in 1976, places players by audition in two orchestras by grade. A family-run music store in town tunes and repairs pianos and teaches piano among many instruments, and the band boosters at Beyer High School have been a registered nonprofit since 1974.
