That headline crowds out almost everything else, and the music here gets overlooked. It shouldn't. The Fresno Philharmonic plays its Daniel R. Martin Masterworks series under music director Rei Hotoda, the Warnors Center still houses the four-manual Robert Morton theater organ built for the room in 1928, and Fresno State's School of Music keeps a 270-seat Concert Hall and the 200-seat Wahlberg Recital Hall busy through the school year.
Start with geography. The city sits roughly three hours by car from the Bay Area and three and a half from Los Angeles, where much of California's conservatory and teaching talent is concentrated. Whatever you are after — jazz voicings, advanced classical repertoire, structured preparation for graded exams — the teacher who fits you may simply not be the one nearest your zip code, and a freeway drive is not something anyone sustains weekly. The Tower District takes its name from the Tower Theatre, which opened in December 1939 behind an 80-foot neon tower designed by S. Charles Lee and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The blocks around it hold most of the city's small-venue nightlife.
