After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
Piano is coordination before it is talent, and coordination answers to work. The first short pieces with both hands together - a melody in the right hand over a few notes in the left - usually come after a few weeks of regular practice. How far you go from there depends on how often you sit down between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private piano lesson lets you work at the instrument you already have, one-on-one, without waiting for a group to catch up. For a child, a one-on-one lesson keeps all 45 minutes on one pair of hands rather than on a room full of them.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. Anyone can learn to play the piano, and the early lessons are about hand position, posture and reading both clefs rather than repertoire. Our teachers work with complete beginners as often as with advanced players, and every lesson is built around your own goals and the music you want to play.

In Lafayette we found piano teaching at a university program that works in semesters and at a music school that signs students to a monthly membership with a two-month minimum. The university program's fall 2026 session runs until December 11, 2026. Baton Rouge lies 52.1 miles off in a straight line.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. We found no published piano rate in Lafayette: the UL Piano Institute lists thirteen lessons a semester without a price, and a music school in the city works by monthly membership.
A keyboard is enough to begin on. What matters more than the number of keys is touch sensitivity: the keys have to answer to how hard you press, because that is how piano technique is built. Teachers widely treat 61 touch-sensitive keys as workable for a first year and recommend a full 88 weighted keys once you are a year or two in. Your teacher will look at what you have in the trial lesson.
Most piano teachers start children at around six or seven, once a child knows basic letters and numbers, can follow a simple instruction and can sit and focus for a stretch. Readiness counts for more than the birthday, and the free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette runs the UL Piano Institute, which teaches piano to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade and to adults. Lessons are individual and run thirty or forty-five minutes, with thirteen of them in each fall and spring semester and five in summer. Piano pedagogy students and faculty do the teaching, with a recital in Angelle Hall each semester. Campus practice rooms are kept for enrolled music students, so Institute students practice at home.
Lafayette Music Company opened in 1955 and keeps a showroom of pianos, digital pianos and portable keyboards and lists piano moving, rental and repair among its services. The Music Box, a music school founded in 2012, teaches piano in person and online. The Lafayette Parish School System serves the whole parish and lists instrumental music at seven high schools, and three of its arts academy schools include piano. The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra has nine programs in its 2026-2027 season.
