Tell us what you want to play and we match you with one of more than 150 guitar teachers, taking your own criteria into account. The first lesson is a free trial lesson with no obligation, and you decide after it whether to carry on.
After the trial you and your teacher agree on a weekly slot. Every lesson runs 45 minutes, one-on-one and live over video, and the hourly rate starts at $29 in a monthly plan. You can move a lesson or switch teachers in the booking tool.
The first clean chord changes under a steady strum tend to come with a few weeks of regular playing. How far you go from there depends on how often you pick the guitar up between lessons, which is what the sheet music in your SIRIUS Workspace is for.
No one is too late to begin: a private guitar lesson works with the guitar you already have, acoustic, electric or classical, one-on-one and without waiting for a group to catch up. In a one-on-one lesson all 45 minutes go to one player's hands and one player's questions.
Beginners need no prior experience at all. The early lessons are about posture, first chords and a steady strumming hand, and reading tabs and notes comes along the way. Some of our teachers specialize in guitar for beginners, others teach advanced and professional players, and every lesson is built around the songs and styles you want to play.

In Philadelphia we found guitar teaching at two shops that teach in the store, two music schools with guitar on the program and a one-credit class at the community college. Online, your choice of teacher no longer depends on which of these sits near your home, and the lesson reaches you on whatever day fits your week, from your own couch.
Online lessons take the travel out of the week: no drive, no guitar case to carry, and a slot that stays the same even when the rest of the week does not. Your teacher watches both of your hands on camera and stops you where a chord change buzzes or a rhythm drifts. If a teacher turns out not to fit, you switch in the booking tool.
SIRIUS has over 150 guitar teachers, part of more than 400 music teachers across vocals, piano and guitar. Every one of them is vetted and handpicked before a single lesson, carries a SIRIUS certification, and stays in regular training and quality control. We teach every level and every age, from a first lesson to stage-ready.
You are matched rather than assigned: tell us your style, whether classical, rock, jazz or fingerstyle, along with your goals and your schedule, and we find the teacher who fits them. Lessons run live over video on software we developed ourselves for music lessons, so the sound carries the detail a guitar lesson depends on. In the SIRIUS Workspace your guitar sheet music is there for you outside of lessons too.

A lesson is 45 minutes, and in a monthly plan the hourly rate starts at $29. Your trial lesson is free. A plan covers two, three or four hours a month on a three- or six-month membership; more hours and a longer term bring the hourly rate down. You can pause or adjust your plan at any time. Locally, one guitar shop lists private lessons at $150 per month, or $40 for a single lesson, and does not say how long a lesson runs.
Either one works, and the guitar you actually want to play is usually the better choice, because that is the one you will pick up. An electric tends to have lighter strings, which is easier on the fingers at first; a steel-string acoustic needs no extra equipment. If you are unsure, a common piece of advice is to start on an acoustic. Our lessons cover acoustic, electric and classical guitar, so the one you already own is a fine place to begin.
Many children are ready for guitar at around six or seven, and some not until ten or eleven, which is normal. Readiness counts for more than the birthday: real interest in playing, the ability to sit and focus for a stretch, and hands that reach around a guitar neck sized for a child. The free trial lesson is where you and the teacher find out whether yours is ready. Adults start with us at every age, and nobody is too late.
That depends on what you want to play and on how much you practice between lessons, so the number of lessons differs from one student to the next. The early work is posture, first chords and keeping the strumming hand steady, and you can start on your favorite songs right away and build from there. Your teacher sets the pace with you after the trial lesson.
Yes, and for guitar the camera covers what matters. A guitar lesson is mostly listening, demonstrating and repeating, and none of that needs the same room. Your teacher sees your fretting hand and your picking hand on camera, can stop you on a buzzing note or an uneven strum, and the sheet music you work from stays open in your Workspace between lessons. Philadelphia has in-person guitar teaching at two shops and two music schools in the city, and the nearest larger city, New York, is 80.5 miles away.

In Philadelphia, guitar is on the class list of a public high school. Central High School, part of the School District of Philadelphia, listed a half-year Guitar 1 class for grades ten to twelve in an archived copy of its subject guide. The Community College of Philadelphia listed a one-credit Guitar I course in an archived copy of its catalog.
Two independent guitar shops in the city teach in the store. One repairs instruments in house, sells guitars and amps, and runs an adult band program of ten rehearsals; the other has sold classical guitars and sheet music since 1967. A regional chain store sells guitars and does factory-authorized repairs. A nonprofit music school teaches guitar one-on-one and has a guitar ensemble, and a university community program offers Suzuki guitar for children ages three to eight. The Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, also founded in 1967, holds a guitar festival, a guitar competition and a 2026-27 concert season of five weekends.
