Cactus Club on South Wentworth Avenue in Bay View has put loud guitars in a small room for more than twenty-five years. And every Wednesday since 1993, Linneman's Riverwest Inn on East Locust Street has hosted its Acoustic Open Stage, about as low-pressure a first gig as exists.
The practical case is less romantic. The city sprawls from Bay View on the lakefront to the far northwest side, and a teacher on the East Side is a real commitment from the other end of it, especially between November and March, when Milwaukee's roughly four feet of average annual snow and icy stretches of I-94 turn a 25-minute drive into an hour or a cancellation. The Rave and Eagles Ballroom on West Wisconsin Avenue cover the touring end, Cactus Club and Shank Hall the club circuit, and Milwaukee Irish Fest fills Henry Maier Festival Park every August, with acoustic guitar at the center of its trad sessions. You practice at the kitchen table, then take it six blocks down the road.
Children can usually begin around age seven on a smaller-bodied guitar, learning through songs rather than drills. Teenagers arrive with one riff in mind and absorb the theory sideways while chasing it. Adults starting from zero often move faster than they expect, and returning players who quit after high school need a few weeks to rebuild calluses before the muscle memory comes back.
