Lesson length, experience and any travel all move the number, so ask directly before you assume anything. Repetition with a target. The common mistake is drilling a change until it works once and then moving on to something else. Instead take two chords, set a slow metronome and change on the beat, lifting your fingers only as far as they have to travel and putting down the finger that both shapes share first. Speed comes from smaller movements, not from hurrying. Ten minutes of that on most days will beat an hour of it on a Sunday, and a teacher can spot the one finger that keeps arriving late, which is nearly impossible to see from the inside.
Most children can begin around six or seven, once they can hold their concentration for twenty minutes and reach across the strings comfortably. Size matters more than the birthday: small children usually start on a half or three-quarter body and move to a full-size instrument later, and nylon strings are gentler on young fingertips than steel. If you are unsure, take the trial lesson before buying anything and let the teacher watch your child's hands on camera, then let a shop such as the Doo Wop Shop on Bardstown Road match a body size to what the teacher suggested.
You set a phone, tablet or laptop so that both hands are visible, the fretting hand from the side and the picking hand from the front, and then you play. Corrections arrive while you are still playing, just as they would if the teacher were on the next chair. Spiderland was played on guitars in standard tuning with no effects pedals whatsoever, and what carries it is timing, restraint and choice of notes. Pedals are enjoyable and worth exploring later, but they magnify whatever your hands are already doing, including the parts that are not tidy yet. If you play electric you do need something to plug into, though a small practice amp is plenty for the first year, and if you play acoustic you need nothing beyond the guitar itself.

Two bands out of this one river town point in opposite directions, and a beginner can take something from each. Slint formed in Louisville in 1986 and released Spiderland in March 1991, an album cut in four days that is still treated as the starting point of post-rock. My Morning Jacket came together here in 1998 around Jim James, whose early records leaned so heavily on echo that reverb became the band's signature, and whose album Circuital was later made inside an old church in his hometown.
Spiderland was played in standard tuning with no effects pedals at all. Its force comes from dynamics and timing: the restraint ahead of the loud section, the note deliberately withheld, the entry landing precisely where it belongs. That is teachable from your very first hour, and it is why a metronome and a controlled picking hand will take you further early on than any pedal you could buy. Tone is the other half of the argument, but a room and a long reverb tail will not disguise a chord change that arrives late.
The north bank of the Ohio River is a different state. Jeffersonville and New Albany are their own cities in Indiana, not districts of this one, and that matters when you go shopping for a teacher, because crossing the water can cost money. The two I-65 spans, the Abraham Lincoln and the John F. Kennedy Memorial bridges, carry RiverLink tolls, as does the Lewis and Clark Bridge upriver at Prospect; only the Clark Memorial on US 31 and the Sherman Minton on I-64 are free. Put a toll at each end of a 45-minute lesson and the arithmetic gets silly.
The Kentucky side has its own version. More than 20,000 people work for UPS around the Worldport hub at the airport, and plenty of other households here keep hours that shift from week to week. Under all of it sit rhythm, timing and dynamics, because the volume you decide not to play at is a technique of its own.
You can learn on either, and there is no universally correct place to begin. An acoustic asks for nothing but itself, builds hand strength quickly and sits well under fingerstyle and songwriting. An electric carries lighter strings that treat new fingertips more kindly and brings bends and vibrato within reach much sooner, but it arrives with an amp, and an amp counts as a second instrument. What the gain control genuinely does, and why a clean channel exposes every rushed note, belongs in a lesson.

Begin with whichever guitar is already in the house, not a newer one and not a better one. An hour with a teacher costs you nothing and commits you to nothing.
