Private voice teachers in the northern Sacramento Valley usually land between $50 and $90 an hour. What is worth comparing is not the hourly figure but the entry point: with SIRIUS the opening session is not billed, so you hear what a coach does with your voice before any money moves.
Genuine amusia is uncommon enough that most voice teachers never meet a case of it. Pitch, breath and resonance behave like any other coordination you can drill: they respond to being shown, corrected and repeated. Yuba City is the seat of Sutter County, set on the west bank of the Feather River with the Sutter Buttes rising out of the flat land behind it - a formation locals like to call the smallest mountain range in the world, though geologists are less sure. The city anchors its own metropolitan area and is home to one of the largest Sikh communities outside Punjab. The Gurdwara Sahib on Tierra Buena Road has drawn worshippers since 1970, and its Nagar Kirtan has been winding four and a half miles through these streets every autumn since 1980. That is a lot of communal singing for a farming town.
Because the town keeps building places to be heard. Yuba Sutter Arts bought the old Sutter Theater on Plumas Street and has the Clark Family Black Box running with a hundred and fifty seats while the main house is still being restored. The Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds on Franklin Avenue book touring acts through the year. Concerts in the Park came back to Gauche Aquatic Park on Thursday evenings. And the Yuba Sutter Oratorio Society, close to eighty years old, still fields both a symphony and an oratorio chorus and puts young soloists in front of an audience every February.
What a coach can do for you depends entirely on what you sing. Shabad kirtan asks different things of a voice than a country chorus or a musical theater belt, and a serious teacher builds the plan around that difference rather than flattening it. The early lessons map the voice you actually have: where the tone sits easily, which corner of the range you quietly steer around, and how the pitch behaves once you press.
Air and support come before anything else - most problems people bring to a lesson turn out to live there. After that: intonation that survives an audience, an even tone from your lowest usable note to your highest, and the stamina to finish what you started. Diction and phrasing are the last layer, and the one people notice.

Some students arrive already singing every week in a temple or a church. Others have never once sung where another person could hear. Both are normal, and neither is a better place to begin than the other.
Agriculture, healthcare and a long drive to Sacramento between them make a fixed weekly appointment across town difficult to keep. A session that begins on your own screen removes the part that usually breaks.
