Almost everyone can be taught, and the people who doubt it hardest are usually the ones who improve most visibly. Singing is coordination between breath, ear and throat. Coordination is not a gift; it is a thing that gets practiced under supervision.

Vineland was drawn on paper before it existed. Charles K. Landis bought twenty thousand acres of South Jersey in 1861, laid out a hundred-foot-wide avenue through the middle of it, banned the sale of alcohol and recruited Italian winemakers to farm the land around it. One consequence arrived in 1869, when a local Methodist dentist named Thomas Bramwell Welch pasteurized grape juice so his congregation could take communion without wine - the beginning of a company you have heard of. Today more than four in ten residents here are Hispanic or Latino, and the town has two cultural inheritances rather than one.
The strongest musical address in town is the Frank Guaracini Jr. Fine and Performing Arts Center on College Drive, at the Cumberland campus of Rowan College of South Jersey. The college's wind symphony and jazz band play free concerts there under a conductor who has led them for over forty seasons, its community music program is open to instrumentalists and singers from outside the college, and the Bay Atlantic Symphony brings a full professional series to the same hall. Down on Landis Avenue the city runs its own summer concerts at the Serra band shell in Giampietro Park, and closes the street outright for Cruise Down Memory Lane every June.
Here is something worth saying plainly: Vineland does not have a standing community chorus of its own. That makes a private teacher more useful here than in towns where a choir does the early work for free. Lessons here run in English and in Spanish, for children who have just discovered they like the sound of their own voice and for adults who put it off for thirty years. The starting point matters far less than the frequency.
Shift work, farm hours and a spread-out city of nearly seventy square miles make a fixed appointment somewhere else a fragile thing. A lesson that comes to your kitchen does not have that weakness.
