Children manage it from about seven, once they can hold a plan for twenty minutes. Teenagers benefit from steady work through the voice change. Adults in Taunton start at every age, often after a season of singing carols and realizing they enjoyed it.

Taunton has been the shire town of Bristol County, Massachusetts since the seventeenth century - settled in 1637, incorporated in 1639, built around two commons rather than one. The silverware works that gave it the name Silver City are gone, Reed and Barton having ended in bankruptcy a decade ago, but the other nickname is very much alive. Taunton calls itself the Christmas City, and on the first Saturday of December it lights the Green and fills the surrounding blocks with music. The 2026 edition will be the hundred and thirteenth.
Be honest about what this city is and is not. Taunton has neither a concert hall nor a professional orchestra. What there is instead is a stubborn civic habit of singing together: the Taunton Civic Chorus has been going since 1959, takes anyone from high school age up without an audition and brings its concerts back into the city twice a year. Liberty and Union Park on Main Street runs free summer concerts. The Center on Main hosts jazz nights through the warm months. The Taunton River Festival puts live music on the riverbank at Weir Village every June. It is amateur in the original sense of the word, and there is a great deal of it.
A chorus will let you hide in a section, which is comfortable and also the reason many singers stop improving. One coach and one singer removes that option in the most useful way. The early sessions establish what your voice does easily, what it works around and which habits are worth protecting.

Students come from Weir Village and East Taunton, from Whittenton and the streets off the Green. A few already hold down a part somewhere on a Sunday morning. Most have not sung anywhere in years.
Forty miles to Boston, eighteen to Providence, and a commuter line that only reopened last year - a lot of people here spend their evenings in transit. A lesson at home gives that hour back.
