Private voice teachers in Santa Cruz commonly charge somewhere between $50 and $90 an hour, and the rates climb further once you head over the hill toward the Bay Area. Lessons with SIRIUS run online at a rate that does not depend on your zip code, and the first one is on us.
Nearly everyone can be taught. Pitch, breath and resonance are physical skills, and skills respond to practice with feedback. What people call tone deafness is usually an untrained ear, and ears train faster than most students expect.
Six or seven works for most children, provided the lesson stays short and playful. Teenage voices change and need a coach who understands that. Adults in Santa Cruz start in their thirties, their sixties and everywhere between.
Give it a few months of weekly lessons and you will hear a difference in your recordings. A year in, you can carry a set without your voice giving out. Mastery is a longer story, and a more interesting one.

The music that came out of that mix is stubbornly its own. Reggae, ska and jam bands formed in local high schools and never quite left - The Expendables started here in 1997, The Devil Makes Three four years later - while a jazz society has been booking world-class players into a room on Cedar Street since 1975. It is a small city that takes its listening seriously.
Because the rooms are close and the standard is high. The Catalyst opened in 1969 and has been on Pacific Avenue since 1976, with Neil Young, Nirvana and Tom Petty among the names that have come through it. Kuumbwa Jazz runs a full season and an Honor Band for young players from the county and the wider Central Coast. The Rio Theatre on Soquel Avenue opened in June 1949 with 938 seats and still books touring songwriters. Moe's Alley keeps blues and reggae going all year. And on Monday nights the Crepe Place hosts a free open mic - the least intimidating audience a new singer will ever find.
Nothing about a SIRIUS lesson is prewritten. Your coach spends the first sessions learning your instrument: its easy notes, its tired notes, the habits you picked up singing along to records. What follows is a plan for that voice and nobody else's.
You begin with breath that supports instead of pushes, and pitch that stays put under pressure. Then the middle of the range, where most voices crack or thin out, and the endurance to rehearse for two hours without paying for it the next day. Style, phrasing and mic technique arrive once the foundation holds.
Coaches are matched to students deliberately - your genre, your goals, your schedule - rather than by whoever happens to be free. The first lesson is free, which makes trying us out a small decision.
