Published rates in Rockville depend on what you are buying. Rockville Chorus prices entry in two parts, an annual membership and a per-semester due, both listed above. JKM Music School at 11726 Parklawn Drive publishes private music lesson rates of $180 a month for 30 minutes, $270 a month for 45 minutes and $360 a month for a full hour, with a $35 registration fee on top; the subject roster is not published on that page, so those are music lesson rates rather than confirmed voice rates. Almost everyone can. Singing asks the breath, the larynx and the resonating spaces to work as one, and that is built by training like any other physical skill. Rockville Chorus makes the case in the way it runs its own audition: the audition is scales and chords sung with the Director, and the chorus tells applicants to come unprepared. That tests trainability rather than a gift. Adults who call themselves tone deaf usually have an untrained ear rather than an untrainable one, and pitch matching is among the first skills a lesson addresses.
Children can start with playful voice work, but serious technical training usually begins once the voice has settled, around the teenage years. Adults have no upper age limit. The approximately 85 volunteer members of Rockville Chorus are the local evidence: it is an ensemble built for people with jobs and Monday evenings. The adult choirs at Christ Episcopal Church and St. Elizabeth Church take singers into a Thursday rehearsal. Beginning at 40 or at 65 is ordinary, and the progress is real.
With weekly lessons and short daily practice, most adults hear a steadier tone and better breath control in eight to twelve weeks. A comfortable working range and reliable pitch usually take six to twelve months. A concrete target gives a concrete timeline: scales and chords for a Rockville Chorus audition is a shorter project than one verse of a song in English polished for a solo call. Singers keep refining for decades, which is why the Thursday rehearsal at 109 South Washington Street keeps the same slot from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. week after week.

Rockville Chorus, an independent nonprofit since May 2024, rehearses Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Social Hall at that address, and the price of entry is published: $50 a year in membership paid to the City of Rockville, plus $55 a semester in dues.
The city keeps the calendar of that stage. Four resident companies are based on Edmonston Drive: Rockville Little Theatre, Rockville Musical Theatre, Victorian Lyric Opera Company and Rockville Civic Ballet. Rockville Musical Theatre and Victorian Lyric Opera Company both publish sung work on that stage. The chorus that uses the same room publishes its own way in. Rockville Chorus auditions at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters, in two entry windows a year, with a described format: you sing scales and musical chords with the Director, and the chorus states that no preparation is necessary.
Rockville Chorus publishes approximately 85 volunteer members. A director working with 85 people on a Monday from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. is balancing sections, setting tempo and fixing entrances; ninety minutes divided across 85 voices leaves no room to examine one singer's breath, onset or passaggio. The same holds at Christ Episcopal Church, 109 South Washington Street, and St. Elizabeth Church, 917 Montrose Road, whose adult choirs share a two-hour Thursday slot. A lesson is where your own instrument gets examined, and where the habits you carry into a rehearsal get corrected.
Victorian Lyric Opera Company rehearses and performs at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre on Edmonston Drive and publishes a separate audition address, Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 7611 Clarendon Road in Bethesda, a neighboring community; solo applicants there prepare one verse of a song in English. Rockville Musical Theatre works in book musicals on the same Edmonston Drive stage. Christ Episcopal Church sings Anglican service music, and St. Elizabeth Church sings Catholic liturgy and lists cantors. Lessons cover breath management, resonance, diction across those styles, sight-reading, and the scales and chords a Rockville Chorus audition asks for.

Rockville Little Theatre has published that auditions for its next production will be held in October 2026 at 603 Edmonston Drive. Preparing for a fixed date works better when the preparation is not also tied to one weeknight. Your teacher is matched to your voice and your goal, not to a fixed room on a fixed weeknight.
Lessons run over video with low-latency audio, so your teacher hears your actual sound rather than a compressed approximation. Recordings stay available, so this week's onset can be set against last month's while you drill for a Fall or Spring audition. You practice at home, at whatever hour is left after a Monday on Edmonston Drive or a Thursday on Montrose Road, and arrive at the next lesson with a specific problem.
The F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre seats 406 and hosts over 100 performances a year in Rockville Civic Center Park. Montgomery College's Rockville campus at 51 Mannakee Street publishes three vocal ensembles as one-credit courses: Chorus and World Ensemble are listed as open to all students, and Chamber Singers is listed with an audition required. Published tuition in 2026-2027 gives $553.80 for three credit hours for a Montgomery County resident. The Fitzgerald Theatre's box office at 240-314-8690 handles the four resident companies on the same address.
