<p>Quincy is quiet about the price of being taught. The Symphony Chorus states there is no fee to join, though a concert uniform is required. John Wood Community College offers private lessons in voice and notes only that a special lab fee applies, without printing a figure. The Vancil Performing Arts Center advertises voice lessons as private one-on-one instruction and publishes no rate. We can be exact where the city is not. Our figure begins at $29 for a lesson. The introductory hour ahead of it is not billed at all.</p>
<p>The chorus itself gives the most useful answer in town. It welcomes experienced choral singers in all ranges, then defines experience broadly enough to include anyone who sang in a high school or college chorus or a church choir. What sits underneath it is a handful of ordinary physical skills, each of which can be taught: holding a pitch, spending breath evenly, and moving between the lower and upper parts of a range without a bump in the middle.</p>
<p>A seven-year-old is old enough to begin, given brief lessons resting on songs rather than exercises. The city's own groups sort largely by grade and by voice: the youth chorus runs third through twelfth grade and selects for unchanged voices, so boys move out of it when their voices break. A lesson stays with the voice while it settles instead of handing it back, and at the far end nothing disqualifies an adult beginner.</p>
<p>Chorus rehearsals here run from late summer into April, which is a reasonable yardstick. Within four or five weeks the breath usually behaves differently and long phrases stop collapsing near the end. By the third month accuracy of pitch has generally settled, because most of that problem turns out to be listening. Tone keeps developing well past a year. Reading well enough to learn a part unaided takes the longest and depends almost entirely on how often you sit with a score.</p>
<p>They suit this city's way of doing things particularly well. The audition here rests on a song you brought yourself, and the useful work is on that song, in detail, with one listener. That is exactly what a video lesson is: no section balance to keep, no hall acoustic flattering or punishing you, and your own sound arriving back clearly. Add a display of your pitch against the intended note while you hold it, and a recording of every hour, and the detail work becomes measurable rather than remembered.</p>

Read what Quincy, Illinois asks of a singer at the door and a pattern shows up at once. The Symphony Chorus wants applicants to prepare a song they enjoy singing, offering a hymn, a patriotic song or a Christmas carol as examples. For anyone who cannot think of one, hymnals are available at Salem if auditioners want to sing a hymn. At the Quincy Community Theatre you bring the sheet music and a live piano accompanist will be provided. The repertoire has to come from your own life. The rest the town lays on.
Because a door built that way rewards whoever already has something to bring. The chorus is explicit about where that something usually comes from: if you have sung in high school or college choruses or church choirs you most likely have acquired the experience needed. That sentence is generous, and it also happens to describe a route. Somebody who never sang in a school choir and never joined a church one arrives at the same door, and the hymnal on the table cannot supply the years behind the song.
What happens at that audition is short and mostly about placement. Dr. Phyllis Robertson, who has conducted the chorus since 1989, runs each applicant through some scales to check range and explains what is expected of members. It is fair and it is quick, and its purpose is sorting rather than teaching. No one in that room has been assigned to work out why your third line runs out of air.
The song you bring is the syllabus. A carol asks for a clean straight line and vowels that stay open at the top. A folk song asks for words that carry without shouting. A hymn asks for four square phrases in a row with breath left over. Working through one of them one-on-one takes apart the four things underneath: air spent evenly across a phrase, a smooth change of gear where the voice shifts, pitch you can check as you go, and enough reading to pick up a part without hearing it first.
Our own lessons do not run in windows. The chorus takes new voices at set moments and the youth chorus holds two hearings a year, in August and again in December for the spring semester. Lessons open whenever you want them and stop when you say so. One teacher stays with you, picked to suit the repertoire you have in mind, and there is no uniform to buy and no committee to convince.
Bringing a song you already know has one hidden difficulty: you know it too well to hear it. Years of singing a carol at home build a version in the ear that no longer matches what comes out. Recording every lesson breaks that loop, because the recording has no memory of how it used to sound. Pitch can also be drawn beside the note you were aiming for as you hold it, which settles quickly whether the top of a phrase really is flat or only feels precarious.
The Quincy Society of Fine Arts, founded here in 1947 by George M. Irwin, is described as the first community arts council in the nation and runs today as Arts Quincy. The Civic Music Association was organized in 1927. The Symphony Chorus dates as an ensemble to 1972, when the Quincy Choral Society joined the orchestra association. The Quincy Community Theatre, founded in 1923 and now at 300 Civic Center Plaza, seats 498 across orchestra and mezzanine and can pull nine sections out of its apron to open a pit for as many as 25 players. Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ at 435 S. 9th St. was incorporated by a special act of the General Assembly in 1861 and amended in 1867 as the German Evangelical Salem's Church; its Schantz organ of 34 ranks has its Great behind the original Moller case of 1928. Blues in the District fills Washington Park from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on second and fourth Fridays in summer, free of charge.
The youth chorus, founded in 1995, covers third through twelfth grades in two groups, one of which is still called the Kinderchor, and its literature is chosen for girls and boys with unchanged voices. The Quincy Community Theatre casts from age seven upward. The adult chorus looks for singers who have sung before. At Quincy Senior High, Dan Sherman started the show choir Electric Blue in 1969, in his first year as choral director. Somebody who decides at fifty to sing properly is a long way from that room, and a lesson is the shortest route back.
Quincy Transit Lines runs five weekday routes and keeps buses moving seven days a week apart from Thanksgiving and Christmas, with the Red, Green and Yellow leaving 7th and Jersey on the hour and half hour, the Purple on the hour, and the Blue going from behind the Quincy Town Center at 12 and 42 minutes past. A regular fare is $0.50, students pay $0.25, riders over 65 travel free, and the exact fare has to go in the box. All of which matters if your singing is somewhere else. A lesson taken in your own front room needs no fare at all.
The trial hour borrows the town's own format and costs nothing. Bring a song you enjoy singing. Sing it once through. Then hear what it tells a teacher: where the breath ran short, where the pitch drifted, which part of your range does the work and which part has never been asked. You leave with a plain account of how your own voice behaves and one thing to do about it, which is more than an audition is built to give you.
Quincy hands you the hymnal, the accompanist and the pit, and asks that the song be yours already. It is a generous arrangement for anyone who has one. If you do not, or if the one you have has quietly gone out of shape, then the missing piece is an hour given over entirely to your own singing. That can start at home, this week, with whatever you can already sing.
