Berkshire Music School on Wendell Avenue publishes its rates and they are moderate: $170, $255 or $340 for four lessons of thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes, which is $42.50, $63.75 and $85 a lesson - $85 an hour at every length. It also runs an adult vocal class on Monday evenings for $375. Past that one institution, and one independent teacher down in Tyringham at $60 for forty-five minutes, published pricing in this county effectively disappears and you have to ring people and ask. You need a working voice and somebody to tell you the truth about it every week. Matt Cusson was born and raised here to a classical piano teacher and a choir director, went to Berkshire Community College and then Berklee, and took a Grammy nomination in 2023 for arranging. What he had at home was two musicians who could hear what he was doing.
The Berkshire Concert Choir takes singers from high-school age up. Younger children can sing in short sessions; serious voice work usually waits until the instrument has settled. Adults start whenever they decide, and in a county where unemployment runs 5.6 percent in February and 4.1 percent in June, February is when there is time to.
Support moves within weeks. Reading well enough to hold your part among eighty others arrives sooner than most people expect. The sound a formal classical audition expects - a prepared solo in a foreign language, sight-reading on the spot - is years of work rather than months, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
Yes. What travels one way is your voice at close range; what comes back is a model you can copy, and one line carries both directions at once. It also works in a Berkshire January, which the drive over to Lenox on a Monday night does not always.

Pittsfield keeps two calendars. From mid-May the county fills: Arrowhead unlocks the farmhouse where Melville finished Moby-Dick with Mount Greylock filling the north window, Barrington Stage raises the curtain on Union Street at the end of the month, and Tanglewood, nine road miles south in Lenox, fills its lawns for the summer. Berkshire County employed 64,466 people in July 2025. By April 2026 it employed 59,987. That is about four and a half thousand jobs, near enough seven percent of the county workforce, arriving and leaving on a schedule; unemployment ran 5.6 percent in February and 4.1 percent in June, and the largest single employment industry in the county is restaurants. Barrington Stage's 2026 season runs from the twenty-seventh of May to the twenty-fifth of October. For the other seven months it stages nothing, and the winter calendar downtown belongs to the Colonial Theatre and to whoever is rehearsing in a church basement.
Start by putting Tanglewood where it belongs. It is in Lenox, nine road miles and about twenty-one minutes away, and it is a summer festival. The one Tanglewood-branded ensemble that takes volunteer adult singers, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, rehearses at Symphony Hall in Boston on weeknights through fall, winter and spring - a hundred and thirty-seven miles each way from here, unpaid, with an audition that asks for a classical solo, plus a prepared excerpt from Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem sung in German, plus sight-reading and aural tests, and that states outright that songs from the American Songbook, folk songs and musical theater numbers are not permitted. The Boston Symphony's own words are that it is not a chorus for beginners. What is genuinely here is smaller and much better news. The Berkshire Concert Choir meets Thursdays seven to nine at Zion Lutheran on First Street, takes anyone from high-school age up at any level of experience with no audition, and charges $75 a semester, and seats about eighty people. That is the real answer, and it is a Pittsfield answer.
The county's largest and most ambitious chorus, Berkshire Lyric, outgrew its Pittsfield room and moved its adult rehearsals to Lenox in 2025. Eight miles each way on a Monday night, mid-September to late May, through a winter that brings serious snow. None of that is a scandal. It is friction, and it is the sort of friction that quietly decides who sings.
Support that lasts a long phrase. A break you cross without a seam. Tone that reads in a live church acoustic rather than dissolving into it. Enough German and Latin to walk into a Bach or a Faure without guessing at the vowels. And the reading speed that makes eighty other singers glad you turned up.

Search for a choir here and the internet will hand you at least one ghost. A church website still advertises a chancel choir on Thursdays at seven, six years after its last update, for a congregation that joined with another in January 2023 to form the United Church of Christ, Pittsfield. A chorus still publishes an auditions page pointing singers at the Unitarian church on Wendell and Broad, a room its adult chorus left in September 2025. Both pages are live; neither is true. What is true: the Berkshire Concert Choir was formed in 1977 out of the merger of the Stockbridge Singers and the cantata choir of South Congregational Church, and it still rehearses on Thursday evenings, the fall cycle opening on the third of September. Berkshire Lyric bills a ninety-voice chorus, and in 2025 its singers ran from sixteen to eighty-two. Barbershop happens on Tuesday evenings here, at the Berkshire Hills Chorus, whose international parent adopted a new name in May 2026. And the singer to name is Matt Cusson, born and raised in this city to a piano teacher and a choir director - not Emily Strayer of the Chicks, who was born in Pittsfield in 1972 and raised in Addison, outside Dallas, and who turns up on most lists of local musicians anyway.
Lessons happen wherever there is a door that closes - in Morningside or on the West Side, in Lenox, Dalton, Lanesborough, Great Barrington, North Adams or Williamstown.
A county whose largest employment industry is restaurants is a county where evenings are the shift. Add a summer that pulls in four and a half thousand jobs and then hands them back, a professional theater season that runs five months, and the drive over to Lenox in the dark, and the fixed weekly slot starts to look like the fragile thing it is. An hour that moves with you does not care which calendar the county is on this week.
