Sonoma County sits at the upper end of the national range, so expect roughly $50 to $90 an hour from a private teacher in Petaluma, more if you drive down toward Marin. Talent gives you a head start and nothing more. The parts of singing that people actually notice - pitch, tone, power - are physical coordinations, and coordinations get built. Ask any choir director how many of their strongest voices arrived sounding strong.

The town called itself the Egg Basket of the World, and it still throws a parade about it every April. Nothing about Petaluma feels borrowed from Santa Rosa or the city an hour south.
Two independent music halls in a town this size is unusual. The Mystic Theatre on Petaluma Boulevard books touring acts week after week; the Phoenix Theater on East Washington runs all-ages shows as a nonprofit and has done for decades. Add McNear's next door, the Big Easy off American Alley, free Friday concerts through the summer at the Theatre District, and an outdoor series at Lagunitas, and there is somewhere to hear live singing most nights of the week. The Petaluma Music Festival every July even sends its proceeds back into the school music programs.

And the town produces its own: Em Rossi grew up here, graduated from Petaluma High and has since played the Mystic as a headliner.
Students come from the neighborhoods above the boulevard, from the Oakhill-Brewster streets, from Foundry Wharf and the east side. Some sing in a choir already. Others have not sung in front of anyone since school. Both are ordinary starting points here.
Plenty of people here commute south, and a lesson across town after that drive is the first thing to get dropped. Online lessons remove the drive and, with it, the excuse.
