Seven or eight suits most children, so long as the lesson finishes before the enjoyment does. Through the teenage years the instrument is physically changing and needs watching rather than resting. Adults sign up at every age here, often after decades of meaning to get round to it.

The lesson itself needs an accurate ear at one end and a clean signal in between, and it gets both.

Pensacola sits at the far western end of the Florida Panhandle, closer to Mobile than to Tallahassee and on Central time while the rest of the state runs an hour ahead. It has flown five flags - Spanish, French, British, American and Confederate - and the Spanish colony that Tristan de Luna planted here in 1559 predates St. Augustine, though it was abandoned after two years, which is why the careful phrasing is America's first settlement rather than its oldest city. Since 1914 it has been the Navy's cradle of naval aviation, and the Blue Angels still fly out of NAS Pensacola. Navy, healthcare and tourism carry the place.
Because for a city of this size the musical institutions are unusually serious. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1926 and played its hundredth season last year. Pensacola Opera, founded in 1983, is now in its 44th season and has run an artists-in-residence program since 2003 that takes five young singers a year out of more than two hundred who audition for it. The Choral Society of Pensacola goes back to 1935 and still puts on the Messiah every December. The Pensacola Children's Chorus, started in 1990, runs nine ensembles and around forty performances a season. All of them play the Saenger Theatre on South Palafox, a 1925 movie palace of about sixteen hundred seats that the city bought in 1976 and restored again in 2009.
Those organizations are the destination, not the training. An audition panel will tell you yes or no; it will not tell you that your jaw locks on the approach to a high note, or that you are running out of air three bars before you think you are. That diagnosis needs a teacher listening to you alone, and a plan drawn up afterwards rather than in advance.
Support before anything else, since it governs everything stacked on top of it. Then tuning that holds up in front of a room, a sound that stays even from the bottom of your range to the top, and enough in reserve to finish a set still sounding like yourself. Interpretation, diction and microphone technique arrive later, and they are what separates competent from worth hearing.

The city has produced real singers: Gwen McCrae, whose Rockin' Chair topped the R&B chart in 1975; Benny Spellman of Lipstick Traces; Ida Goodson, who spent her whole life here and once accompanied Bessie Smith; and Larry Butler, born and raised in Pensacola, who produced The Gambler and won a Grammy as producer of the year in 1980.
Students come from East Hill and North Hill, from the beach and from the base - youngsters, teenagers, worship singers, people in bands, and adults who put it down after high school and never quite let go of it.
Navy schedules, hospital shifts and a downtown that has spent this year under construction all argue against a fixed slot across town. A lesson that opens on your own screen bends where a studio appointment simply breaks.
