Private teachers here typically quote somewhere between fifty and a hundred dollars an hour. Illinois State's Community School for the Arts sells voice by the fourteen-week session instead - $306 for thirty minutes a week, $549 for the hour, which works out at roughly $22 and $39 a lesson. That is cheaper per hour than most private teaching here, and worth knowing, if a fourteen-week commitment and a term calendar suit you. Its lessons are given by upper-class and graduate music students. Our first session is free and commits you to nothing.
The Civic Chorale, a town-and-gown ensemble since 1968, takes singers without audition - around a hundred of them, from undergraduates to retirees, engineers and artists and health students. What it does ask is that you read music and cope with foreign languages. Both are taught, which is rather the point.
Roughly seven for children, briefly; the Community School accepts voice students from ten upward. The teenage change is when guidance saves the most time. Adults whenever they decide to.
Breath shifts within weeks. A sound you would take into a hundred-voice chorale singing oratorio is closer to a year. Reading well enough to keep up arrives sooner than people expect.
They do. One direction carries close hearing, the other a demonstration, and a clean connection manages both at once. It also survives a February in central Illinois, which a drive across town does not always manage.

This town is named after a school, and the school was named after an idea about teaching. In 1857 the Illinois legislature created Illinois State Normal University, and the bid that won it planted the school in the fields north of Bloomington - a normal school, meaning a college for training teachers, from the French ecole normale, a school that sets the standard and sends teachers out to carry it. Abraham Lincoln, then a lawyer riding the circuit through Bloomington, drew up the bond that guaranteed the local money pledged to win it. The settlement, until then called North Bloomington, renamed itself Normal in 1865 after the school. A century later the school outgrew the word: on the first of January 1964 it became Illinois State University at Normal, and in 1967 it dropped the last two words. The university gave the name up. The town kept it. It is the only city or town named Normal in the country.
Because the supply here is unusually good, and worth knowing about honestly. The ISU Civic Chorale has been a town-and-gown ensemble since 1968 - around a hundred singers, no audition, weeknight rehearsals, major oratorios and concert masses. Illinois State's Community School for the Arts teaches private voice to anyone from age ten upward, adults included, with prices published by the session. Illinois Wesleyan runs a serious school of music three miles away in Bloomington. What that adds up to is a town where an adult can genuinely be taught - if the fourteen-week semester and the weeknight oratorio happen to fit. Where it thins out is elsewhere: Heartland Community College's chamber choir welcomes anyone sixteen or older but lists no director and no meeting times, and its private lessons are suspended outright for staffing. And there has been no Bloomington-Normal Symphony since 1993, when it merged with the Springfield Symphony to form the Illinois Symphony.
The Chorale asks you to read and to handle a foreign text before you walk in. Nothing about that is unreasonable and nothing about it is self-taught. What closes that gap is sixty minutes with somebody whose only job is your voice.
Breath first. Then pitch that stays put with an orchestra beneath you, a register change nobody catches, enough Latin and German for the repertoire oratorio is actually written in, and reading quick enough to keep pace with a rehearsal instead of trailing it.
Your teacher is picked deliberately, by a person who has read the music you named first. We cover the first hour, and there is no semester to commit to.
Sound is what has to make the journey, so sound is what we engineered. A vowel that spreads, or a line that empties of breath, arrives as it happens and is corrected on the spot.
The musical fame here is mostly alumni fame - two universities pull talented people in for four years and send them somewhere else. Dawn Upshaw, five Grammys and a MacArthur fellowship, graduated from Illinois Wesleyan in 1982 and was born in Nashville. Wayne Messmer, who has sung the anthem at Cubs home games since 1985, is a Wesleyan graduate from Chicago. The genuine local names came up through University High School, Illinois State's own laboratory school on campus: Pokey LaFarge, born in Bloomington and a U-High graduate in 2001, and the jazz pianist John Campbell, U-High class of 1973, who went on to work with Stan Getz and Mel Torme. The town's rooms are good, too. The Normal Theater on North Street is a 1937 Art Moderne cinema the town itself owns and runs. Prairie Fire has staged light opera and musicals across the twin cities since 1998, mostly on the Wesleyan campus; Community Players in Bloomington is in its hundred and fourth season; and Make Music Normal fills seven stages in Uptown for two days each summer.

Two academic calendars that stop dead in May, hospital and insurance shifts, and a chorale rehearsal that has already claimed a weeknight: a standing appointment somewhere else is up against all three. An hour that starts wherever the chair you are already in happens to be faces none of them.
