Northeast Louisiana asks roughly $60 to $90 an hour in private study, more where there is a doctorate behind the teaching. Nobody bills the opening session, so you weigh teaching against teaching.
Yes, and this parish keeps proving it. Mighty Sam McClain was born in Monroe in 1943 and started singing in his mother's gospel church at five. Webb Pierce had his own weekly show on KMLB at fifteen. Bruce Fowler went from West Monroe High School to La Scala and the Met.
About seven, in sessions that stop before the attention does. Adolescence physically remakes the instrument and rewards staying with it. There is no upper limit; in a university parish, plenty of people turn up once the house is empty.
Eight weeks shows up on tape. A year shows up in a room. Everything past that is slow, small work, and that slow work is what holds people for a decade.
They do. A lesson moves an exact ear one way and a model the other; any decent connection handles the pair. In a summer that clears ninety on about ninety days a year, staying put has its appeal.

Monroe began as a Spanish fort. Filhiol's post on the Ouachita became Fort Miro, and in the spring of 1820 the town took the name of the first steamboat to reach it, the James Monroe. It is the seat of Ouachita Parish, faces West Monroe across the river as the Twin Cities of northeast Louisiana, and holds about forty-seven thousand people in a parish of a hundred and fifty-eight thousand - down from a peak of fifty-seven thousand in 1980. The city is close to sixty percent Black; the parish, confusingly, is majority white. Healthcare, retail, the university and Lumen carry the economy. Shreveport is ninety-nine miles west, Jackson a hundred and twenty east. And the airline that became Delta was incorporated here in 1928, after a crop-dusting outfit called Huff Daland moved its headquarters to Monroe in 1925; the head office left for Atlanta in 1941.
Because the ladder here is unusually complete, and most people never find the bottom rung. The University of Louisiana Monroe runs three choirs that hold no auditions at all - Warhawk Singers, Bayou La Belle and University Chorale - alongside an auditioned Concert Choir and a Chamber Singers drawn from it. The University Chorale meets together with the Bayou Masterworks Chorale, a community choir founded in 2005 that is the documented route onto campus for adults who are not students. Above that sit real opportunities: the Strauss Theatre Center, incorporated in 1932 and seating over two hundred and fifty, has two musicals in its 2026-27 season, and Miss Louisiana is crowned every June in the Jack Howard Theatre downtown, talent round included.
A non-auditioned choir is a generous first step and a low ceiling. Nobody holding fifty voices together will diagnose the squeeze in your upper register, and the auditioned group one rung above will decline you without saying why. Getting from one to the other is the specific job of an hour a week in which nobody else is being listened to.
Breath and support underpin everything and are the last to feel automatic. Then pitch that survives a panel, a register change that does not shift gear audibly, and enough endurance for a whole program. Diction, color and what you do with a lyric are last on the worksheet and first off the stage.
The pairing is made on purpose by somebody who read your repertoire first. Nobody bills the first hour. Hours are yours to name and to shift.
Whether the line reproduces your voice honestly decides if any of this works. That is what the engineering was for. A leaking breath or an entry sitting slightly under: each comes through clearly and is fixed before the line is done. Drills and recordings sit waiting between sessions.
Webb Pierce was born in West Monroe in 1921 and at fifteen was given his own fifteen-minute weekly program, Songs by Webb Pierce, on KMLB; he left for Shreveport, the Louisiana Hayride and eventually the Country Music Hall of Fame. Mighty Sam McClain, born in Monroe in 1943, was singing in his mother's gospel church at five and was lead vocalist on the Chitlin Circuit at fifteen. Bruce Fowler, a West Monroe High graduate, won first prize at Operalia in 1994 and sang at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera; his first recording, as tenor soloist in Messiah, was nominated for a Grammy. The Monroe Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1971, opens its fifty-fifth season in October 2026, and Emy-Lou Biedenharn, the contralto whose family name is on half the town, has the university's recital hall named after her. One honest note: Tim McGraw was born in Delhi, in neighboring Richland Parish, not here. His Monroe chapter is real but later - a baseball scholarship to what was then Northeast Louisiana University in 1985, and sitting in with country bands at West Monroe clubs before Nashville.
