<p>Longview publishes several music prices, all of which belong to other organizations. Lower Columbia College asks "$10 - General Audience" for a seat at its choir concerts and lists a $25 music folder fee for its vocal music program, while enrollment in the Community Choir costs nothing, the Hanson Endowment having covered the tuition. Our own figure works differently: lessons at SIRIUS start at $29, and what you choose in length and frequency moves it from there. The hour before that one is on the house, and stopping after it leaves you owing nothing.</p>
<p>The college's own open chorus answers this in its own words. The college writes that its Community Choir "does not require an audition to join", and that group is the largest of the three, mixing singers from the town with students. Nobody is screened out at the start. What a lesson adds is the thing a rehearsal cannot, since a room working on a chord is not listening to you by yourself. Most of what passes for talent in another singer is breath that holds out, tuning that stays put, and a register break somebody actually worked on.</p>
<p>Earlier than most people assume, and later as well. The Southwest Washington Symphony plays an annual children's concert for 2,400 elementary students, so music reaches this town's children well before anybody asks whether they are musical. Around seven works for a first lesson, if it stays short and uses songs the child chose. Teenagers can be taught while the voice is still shifting, the stretch most singers are told to sit out. Adults have no ceiling but the one they brought with them, which usually predates the evidence.</p>
<p>The college measures singing in quarters and puts a concert at the end of each, which is a useful comparison. A month or so of weekly work will alter the way a phrase ends and keep the tone from thinning under pressure. A quarter of that is enough to be handed a line and trusted with it. The register crossing and genuine stamina take longer and arrive in jumps, which is the argument for a weekly hour with somebody who remembers what you did last week rather than an occasional burst of work.</p>
<p>They suit this instrument unusually well. Singing is the rare subject where the student makes all the sound and the teacher only listens, and listening is exactly what travels. A lesson is one voice and one pair of ears, so what has to survive the connection is your tone rather than a whole room. Being heard accurately, and corrected while the sound is still in your ears, happens at least as well on a screen as it does at the far end of a hall.</p>

The biggest choir at the college here asks nobody to sing for a place in it, and it charges nothing to enroll: a foundation pays the tuition. A seat to hear that same choir at a college concert is $10. In the same auditorium the region's orchestra plays for nothing, and prospective players there can audition to join. Money and access run opposite ways here, and singing is where you notice it.
Because of the way the college stacks its three choirs. Lower Columbia College calls its Community Choir the largest vocal ensemble on campus, "approximately 30-40 members", drawn from the town as well as the student body, and states that it "does not require an audition to join". Bella Voce, the auditioned chamber group, runs to "anywhere from 15-30 students". Above that sits an octet. Each step up is smaller and each step up is auditioned, and nowhere in that sequence does anybody spend an hour on one singer.
A choral section has one task, which is to sound like one voice. That is the reverse of what a lesson does. Nobody in that rehearsal is tracking what your own instrument does once a phrase runs past its comfortable length, or why the tone thins exactly there. The rehearsal is about the chord. An hour built around one singer starts from the opposite end: your habits, your two or three real faults, and the order in which they are worth fixing.
The college describes Bella Voce's repertoire as literature "ranging from Vivaldi to Queen", and the two ends of that shelf want opposite things. One wants a line held level and a vowel that keeps its shape; the other wants weight at the top and a gear change nobody can hear. Air is what they have in common, and it is where a lesson starts, because a phrase that runs short announces the fact. After that the work is tuning, tone and stamina, in whatever order your own faults dictate, with reading brought in when you decide you want it.
Nothing here runs on a quarter. You book an hour, you move it when the week moves, and you can start in the middle of what would elsewhere be a term. The music is yours to pick - hymn, country, a jazz standard, Vivaldi or Queen - and the teacher is chosen to suit it rather than to fill a slot. We send no bill for the opening hour. There is no audition, no enrollment window, and nothing you must attend before being heard.
Most video calls are built to make speech intelligible, which means they treat a long note as noise and shave it. Ours is built the other way round, since the note is what the hour exists for. The practical result is that a teacher hears what your voice did rather than a tidied version of it. Everything the hour produces is stored with it, so nothing has to be remembered in order to be repeated.
Longview was laid out in the early 1920s for the Long-Bell Lumber Company and incorporated in 1924, and its performance rooms are barely younger than the street plan itself. The Columbia Theatre at 1231 Vandercook Way opened on Saturday, April 4, 1925, when the organist Arnold Leverenz played a $30,000 Kimball whose nine ranks sat behind a console deliberately widened to look three times that size. A demolition contract was signed in 1980 and the equipment was already in the parking lot when Mount St. Helens erupted on Sunday, May 18; the contractor was pulled away to the recovery, and the city bought the building on December 9, 1982. Across town the 525-seat Wollenberg Auditorium holds the college concerts and also the Southwest Washington Symphony, an all-volunteer orchestra founded in 1966 and now in its sixtieth season, which opens with Holst on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.
Two of the invitations here are genuinely open: the college choir that admits singers unheard, and the Longview Presbyterian Church, which says of its choir "Everyone is welcome to join us!" and typically rehearses on Wednesday evenings, singing once a month on Sundays. Both are invitations into a group, which serves until the thing you want corrected is your own sound. A lesson takes the people a choir is not built around: a child with fifteen minutes of concentration in them, a fourteen-year-old whose voice moved last month, an adult who wants one particular song to sound right by Christmas.
The college runs on quarters, with a choir concert closing every one of them, so the way in carries an opening date and the year arrives in a shape you did not pick. The Columbia Theatre's box office keeps weekday hours from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is shut Saturday and Sunday. A lesson waits on no academic term, and on no counter that shuts at five. It happens where you are, at an hour you picked, and when a Wednesday stops working it becomes a Tuesday.
Pick a time that fits your week and use the hour however you want it. Bring the song you keep stalling on, or a range that will not open, or nothing at all, and see what a teacher makes of it as things stand. There is no audition in it, no part to be assigned and no season to join.
The arithmetic in Longview runs backwards: joining the largest ensemble on that campus costs nothing and asks nothing, while hearing it costs ten dollars. Both of those are transactions with a group. Neither includes the thing most singers actually want, which is an hour spent on one voice by a teacher whose only job in it is to listen. That hour reaches you at home, on an evening you choose.
