Mid-Missouri generally asks between $60 and $90 for the hour. We waive the first one, so what gets compared is instruction and not pricing.
Almost anyone. Lincoln University's choir has been non-auditioned for years and still sings at Carnegie Hall; the Cathedral's adult choir says outright that reading music is helpful but not required. Those are not the policies of institutions that think singing is inherited.
About seven, in sessions short enough to end well. The adolescent years reconstruct the instrument, and sticking with it through them pays. For grown-ups there is no ceiling; where so much of the workforce sits in a state office, a good many begin after two decades at a desk.
Eight weeks registers on tape. Twelve months registers in a hall. Past that the work turns patient and detailed, and the patience is the reason people stay.
They do. A lesson has to carry precision in one direction and demonstration in the other; any solid connection carries the pair. Given what a Missouri February does to a Thursday evening, that is not nothing.

Jefferson City exists because a legislature decided it should. Missouri became a state in 1821 and put its capital on a bluff above the Missouri River, on ground Daniel Morgan Boone had platted, and the legislature moved in five years later. It is one of the smallest state capitals in the country - about forty-two thousand people, seventy-eight thousand in Cole County, a hundred and fifty thousand across the four-county metro - and the State of Missouri employs over fourteen thousand of them, which makes the government the single dominant fact of the local working week. Columbia is about thirty miles north, St. Louis a hundred and twenty-four east. The Capitol was finished in 1917; its dome stands two hundred and thirty-eight feet up under a bronze Ceres, and Thomas Hart Benton's 1936 mural in the House Lounge - overseer's whip, Jesse James and all - is open only on certain days.
Because the two doors here are unusually far apart. Lincoln University, founded in 1866 by African-American Civil War veterans and now a land-grant HBCU, runs a non-auditioned choir that has sung at Carnegie Hall and for the Missouri Legislature, plus an auditioned Vocal Ensemble going back to 1977 with jazz, gospel and spirituals in its book - though both are for people enrolled there. For everyone else the adult choir in town is the Jefferson City Cantorum, going since 1967, rehearsing Thursdays at First Baptist with a seventy-five percent attendance rule. Its audition is unusually explicit: sing America in a quartet, vocal exercises, a four-pitch tonal memory test and a prepared solo, judged on tone, staying on pitch, moderating vibrato and holding your part in balance. That list is effectively a syllabus. The Cathedral of St. Joseph, meanwhile, runs six separate choirs and says plainly that music reading is helpful but not required.
Read that audition list again. Every item on it is a thing one teacher can fix in an hour a week, and no chorus will teach you.
Support, then tuning that stays put with a panel in front of you, then vibrato you decide rather than inherit, then holding your line while three other parts move. That is the Cantorum's checklist in order.

Audio carries a voice lesson and nothing else does, so audio took the engineering. A leaking breath or a flat entry comes through clean and gets fixed in the phrase.
The Miller Performing Arts Center on Madison Street holds eight hundred and ninety-five in a 1926 building the school district reopened in 2005 after a four and a half million dollar renovation paid for entirely by private donations; the Little Theatre, going since 1969, performs there. Capital City Productions runs a dinner theater where twenty-seven volunteers recently covered a musical written for sixty, most of them playing three or four parts. The symphony traces itself to a Little Symphony that first played on Easter Sunday 1923, disbanded in the war, reorganized in 1948, and marked its centenary in 2023. On singers the record is thin, and pretending otherwise would be silly. Shaman's Harvest formed here in 1996 and still tours. Ronald Townson, later of the 5th Dimension, put himself through Lincoln University by conducting its choirs. And the figure who actually belongs on a page about singing lessons is Thomasina Talley Greene - Fisk, then a Juilliard diploma in 1932 - who opened a music studio here in 1942, taught for decades, and put her students on local television. Cedric the Entertainer was born here, but he was raised elsewhere and he is not a musician.

A legislature sitting January to mid-May, hospital rotations, and thunderstorms in both spring and summer are three good reasons a weekly booking clear across the capital falls apart. An hour that opens on your own kitchen table has none of those exposures.
